I find it impossibly challenging to know how to live in a world surrounded by people who show me everyday by their actions that they want me dead.

You do not care. You have no moral compass.

I know you will kill me or leave me severely disabled if I let you. If I weren’t already resisting with everything I’ve got it would already be happening. Especially this week in Spain at

Fuck all of you who have such little regard for other people’s lives. You do not have the right to eliminate me.

If suddenly many of the people all around you had HIV (detectable levels of HIV, in the 80s or 90s, before effective treatments were available)… and you were watching them all have unprotected sex with lots of people, intentionally infecting other people — what would you think of them?

Why is Covid any different? People are infected. They know they are infected. And yet, they are making decisions to behave in ways that will definitely infect dozens or hundreds of other people.

They are often pretending they don’t have COVID.

“It’s no big deal. People don’t get that sick.”

“I took a rapid test and it was negative. That must mean the positive PCR test from yesterday was wrong.”

“I was exposed. I have symptoms and am sick. But the rapid test was negative, so it’s safe for me to be around everyone.”

“If people get really sick, that’s their fault for being vulnerable.”

“It’s ok, I have COVID, but I’m wearing a mask. Except when I want to eat or drink.”

“I’m standing six feet away, so you won’t get it. Even though I’m infected and we are indoors.”

“It’s fine, I washed my hands.”

“I’m only going to be here for 10 minutes.”

“I got infected three days ago, but now I’m over it.”

    WTF.

I cannot live with people like this. I feel like I’m surrounded by sociopaths. Watching them kill and maim people. With a blessing of *everyone* else.

@jensimmons to expand on this in case it isn’t clear is that I feel like a lot of people considered HIV a “gay thing” and something that won’t effect them or they were above it. There was no need to worry. Similar poor logic applied here and they are always surprised it got ‘em

@jensimmons I super feel your frustration on this front. Sadly I've accepted the reality that in my country no one will take it seriously at all anymore, but it's frustrating how everyone has minimized/forgotten the hearing/cardio/mental disability this disease can bring about.

    @jensimmons

At a recent gathering the topic of COVID booster came up. Lots of young people. Most said they were going to skip the booster. I'll be doing my best to talk them off the ledge.

@jensimmons That time when you find yourself hoping it mutates into something truly lethal so that all the people who don't take it seriously get killed off.

Instead I guess there's some threshold of seeing your friends and family getting increasingly sick, disabled, or dead before some small voice says "jeez, maybe I should start taking this thing more seriously". Will continue to live in dread, waiting so see where that threshold might be.

@jensimmons Yesterday at the dermatologist they asked me if I would feel more comfortable if they wore a mask.

“Yes but since y’all have been breathing in this room all day it probably won’t matter much so if you’re just going to put it in the garbage after I leave please don’t. I trust my mask for the 10 min we will be in here.”

5 minutes later they’re asking me to take my mask off so they can full body skin check my face. Ugh I forgot they do that. I held my breath. I feel so dumb. At least I have 4 new boxes of expired tests I can use to make sure I don’t pass it on if I caught anything.

"I cannot live with people like this"
Absolutely amen. What I also struggle with, daily, is the thought that I am absolutely out of my mind, still taking things seriously. Still masking, still doing everything I can to avoid infection.
I've been running on fumes for easily 18 months now.

@jensimmons I sadly have some dear old, old friends, people I have long thought of as among the most moral and intelligent people I know, who are eating in restaurants without masks, masklessness grocery shopping, etc. “It’s just here now.” “Life is full of assaults anyway.” “It felt so good to not have the mask.” Etc.

If these are the most moral and smart?

I feel like I don’t even know them anymore. It’s like what toxoplasmosis does to mouse brains, and they lose their fear of cats.

@jensimmons I've heard this one: "with HIV, if I don't like condoms, I can still live my usual life, just without sex. With covid, if I don't like masks, I will have to isolate at home for years if I don't want to get infected."

Imagine trying to grieve the loss of a friend or a parent when half of everyone you know won't even admit they're dead. Imagine you're stuck in a real-life version of *Weekend at Bernie's*.

@anniegreens @jensimmons Years ago my best guess was we had until 2015 to start making big changes. We failed. I think the rise of these tribal populists in politics is a sign of that. At some level people know we're returning to feudalism and we're picking tribal leaders, not people who will help fix the place.

I tell people in my demographic, many who seem to not give a shit, that when things collapse, we'll be useless, a burden, held accountable for inaction and left behind to die.

@jensimmons I thought TPAC had pretty good rules for COVID protection, but then I saw that people took a large canopy as “outside”, so no masks, and inevitably the reports roll in. It was predictable and is sad. 😔

@yatil I thought TPAC had pretty good rules until I realized the people who have a positive PCR + negative rapid are following the rules when they attend events. When people who have known exposures & are clearly sick, but test negative on rapid are following the rules. Being infected + taking off your mask to drink & eat is allowed. So, no, they have a _horrible_ policy. I am so glad I did not trust them enough to attend in person. Because I would've become deeply ill for another year+.

@jensimmons Oh yeah, Antigen overwriting a positive PCR is a no-go. I wouldn’t even think that people would think that. I guess I meant “pretty good rules” compared to other events that have no rules, but I see where it falls flat.

I wouldn’t have attended, too. There are almost no things that are worth the risk for me, especially not for work. If I learned one thing the past three years then that you cannot trust anyone to be COVID safe.

@jensimmons I don't think they want me dead. I figure they want me to join them in spreading the death and disease because my self-righteous superior behavior is annoying.
