Everybody's loving this clip, for good reason, but it should remind everyone that cities therefore have an obligation to build enough housing that all these marginalized and outcast people can come and afford to live in them on minimum wage *without* becoming homeless. YIMBY!

@volts.wtf I first heard this kind of clap back about 20 years ago. A report came out about homelessness in California. Berkeley did worse than some central town like Tracy or Stockton and their Mayor crowed about it. Berkeley leaders shot back that it's because we don't tell the sheriff to pick up homeless and drop them off in the next jurisdiction. We feed them.

@volts.wtf @PizzaDemon another related issue is “city people don’t know how it is in the real world. Country life is different. We don’t do stuff like that in a small town.” WE GREW UP IN THAT SMALL TOWN AND LEFT BECAUSE IT SUCKED!

@volts.wtf 💯 agree housing should be provided to all the outcast and marginalized. The problem with the push for more housing in places like NYC is that they SAY “affordable” but wind up building for a higher-income demographic and not the people at the margins who truly need it. So big developers come in, towers go up, lip service to “some affordable units” is made, neighborhoods get gentrified, the poor and working class get pushed out, the cycle continues. YIMBY is not enough.

@volts.wtf also suggested alt text 🩷: (please people edit this accordingly as I don’t know the names of everyone in this video 😹)
A short clip from Fareed Zakharia with guest Anand Giridharadas. He describes how americans disparage the image of cities with “large amounts” of poor people and those who don’t fit the “norms” of midwestern conservative states. He ends his talk with “we (sic cities) take care of those who you have failed to love”.

@volts.wtf “I think he's exactly right, but I want to say a couple of things. One thing about cities that I found in this reporting, cities are very unfairly labeled as these problem centers by Donald Trump and others. And one thing is worth remembering. If you look at the population of, well, all people in cities, particularly people who come to cities from elsewhere, but particularly homeless and other vulnerable people in cities, look at youth homeless, a pretty large chunk of those people who end up in cities were failed in some other parts of this country.

Okay? The fraction of youth homeless or LGBTQ, whatever, pretty high. So there are a lot of families in this country who fail the first duty of family, which is to love your kids more than any other thing. And there's a lot of families in this country that look at some verse in some book and their child's face and choose the verse in the book over their child's face and drive their children out of Nebraska or out of Florida or out of Idaho. And those kids come to San Francisco and those kids come to New York and those kids go to Chicago. And we have friends giving dinners with them.

You live in L.A. You are surrounded by people who have those kind of stories. And so cities, every time someone is sleeping on a subway bench in a city, the rest of America can sort of say, ah, look at these cities. But we are holding a lot of your people who you fail to love and take care of. Thank you.”
