    @regehr almost every line of code i've written in the last decade or so has been 'intoxicated' and yet it still seems to be lightyears ahead of average code.

    @regehr i can only describe my personal experience. i already was an expert programmer before i started. at first, it was very difficult, but it got easier. i've come to see this as being used to it. i don't know i could focus long enough to get any code written without weed now.

    @dysfun @regehr

    oh god this shit again...yeah some people actually perform better high because the truth of the matter is some of yall got too much shit you're thinking about in your brains, some of you are overthinking, and even more of you are under-thinking.

    if you are under thinking, weed definitely ain't gonna help you, if you're overthinking, it might help you.

    but of course we gotta wait for the overpaid medical people who lie out their asses about "WHAT CHEMICALS ARE GOOD FOR"

    maybe wait for the government to tell you, you can trust them I bet!

    i dunno dude I am just tired of people who are like "I program sober" WELL GOOD FOR YOU.

    WOULD YOU LIKE A MEDAL!?

    @cyberquixote @regehr i'm pleased to see science about it, even if i don't agree with the conclusion. inevitably these papers are going to tend towards generalisations because that's all they're capable of doing. response to drugs varies massively amongst people, any general answer is going to lack nuance.

    obviously i'm self-medicating for a number of things that the medical system here doesn't appreciate. and everyone who has seen me on and off weed would tell you i'm better high.

    @dysfun @regehr

    yeah, im just frustrated because often the discussion leads to impromptu generalizations that always ignore edge cases, cause of course they fucking would.

    because I don't FIT THE NARRATIVE of what a stoner is, people just use it to immediately pass judgment before they know a single fucking thing.

    I guess thats why I don't feel a need to always mention it, but this brought it out of me LMAO

    @cyberquixote @regehr ...which is very understandable. it irks me too, of course. and yes, i've been fired for my consumption and that is completely unacceptable in a civilised world.

    but i'm very realistic about what i'm doing here. there are side effects that i have to live with that aren't necessarily positive and in general i have to work very hard to keep it in a good place where i'm adequately medicated but not out of it if i'm going to get work done. it's gotten easier since there's legal supply with actual thc contents and shit on the packaging, though.

    i guess we'll find out how much i get done without it soon though, since i'm gonna run out by at the latest monday and i can't afford more.

    @regehr Reminds me of this story from college, working on an E.E. problem set or something with a buddy.

    Me: Did you get the answer to #2?
    Buddy: Sure, it was pretty easy, take a look.
    Me: <checks buddy’s work> Uh, you made a mistake integrating by parts here… and over here you divided by zero…
    Buddy: <looks over his work confusedly> Oh yeah, you’re right. Maybe I shouldn’t have gotten high before working on it this morning.

    Story #372 from “What I learned in college”

    @regehr Funny. Were the authors high? The entire premise that programmers "commonly" use "psychoactive compounds while programming" is a load of hoghwash that isn't even supported by the paper they're referencing.

    Based on the linked paper, a wopping 18% of programmers use cannabis while programming "at least once a month". Only half of these programmers are even employed, the rest are students or unemployed.

    @regehr I'm gonna be the loser here and admit I have never tried.

    All my successes and fuckups are sober based.

    @gwozniak @regehr Haha, I don't know. Personally, I only get high at parties, and it's almost always the same: person brings up some wild theory about "three modes of consciousness" or something, and about the "profoundness" of the universe; I calmly dissect it with a treatise on the Self Model Theory of Subjectivity, and explain how everything in the universe is completely deterministic, including humans, effectively killing the party 😂
