It looks like the structured concurrency API will finalize in #Java 28. If you want to get your hands dirty structuring and scoping some tasks and can make it to #JOnTheBeach (Malaga 🇪🇸, Oct 29-30), join my workshop!

On this day in 1931, 2001 #ACMTuringAward recipient Ole-Johan Dahl was born. Ole-Johan Dahl received the ACM Turing Award with Kristen Nygaard for ideas fundamental to the emergence of object-oriented programming, through their design of the programming languages Simula I and Simula 67.

Today, object-oriented programming is the dominant style of programming for commercial and industrial applications. 🔗 https://amturing.acm.org/award_winners/dahl_6917600.cfm #OTD
CAPTCHAs are getting more difficult these days
I read some post about how Mastodon consists primarily of German-speaking creatures talking in English. I'm gonna do a poll, need to test that. Boosts highy appreciated!
So, do you speak German?
After months of getting things done w/ Claude Code, I've spent ~5 days programming by hand in Lean and a liquid typed language and it's…SO GREAT? I love living in a world where I can get 1000s of mindless LOC in a minute, but also spend an hour on 10 gorgeous handcrafted lines.
This is called the #pumpfoil. She is #pumpfoiling
You pump up and down with your legs and that motion alone is all that is necessary to translate via a hydrofoil under the water surface (like a wing) to give you lift and forward motion
You need good balance, endurance, and if you stop pumping you lose lift and sink rapidly

@regehr Reminds me of this story from college, working on an E.E. problem set or something with a buddy.
Me: Did you get the answer to #2?
Buddy: Sure, it was pretty easy, take a look.
Me: <checks buddy’s work> Uh, you made a mistake integrating by parts here… and over here you divided by zero…
Buddy: <looks over his work confusedly> Oh yeah, you’re right. Maybe I shouldn’t have gotten high before working on it this morning.

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or being able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment.
I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this:
[Note to the mansplainers of Mastodon: This is a thread, so please read the whole thing before replying. Please also know that I am aware of things beyond what's in this thread...]

Bring back þe letter þ. How can you þrow out þe only rune in your alphabet?
Also bring back ð. But ðis time, except in very common words like þe which look nice þe oðer way round, don't treat ðem as interchangeable. Use ð for þe voiced one and þ for þe unvoiced one, like ðey do in Icelandic.
Enoȝ is enoȝ.
I appreciated this chance to go on Bloomberg Tech, though it's always a bit odd to have a conversation with a reporter who is really interested in what's effectively a fictional story.

Coding agents reduce software development to a simple matter of:
* specifying requirements
* verifying correctness and quality
* maintaining and operating software you didn't write
As we all know, those have always been the easiest, most well-understood parts of the craft, so everything is fine!
A very Belgian evening ahead: fries & beer at Devoxx. 🇧🇪🍟🍺
