What the actual fuck.
How does anyone keep up with their RSS feeds? I have 2061 unread items in mine. The vast majority seem overwhelmingly interesting. Days are too short. A lifetime is too short.
Much of the advocacy around age verification discusses the privacy harms of age verification. Yet these measures also threaten something more fundamental: equal access to information and the ability to exercise free expression. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/10/when-no-id-means-no-internet-age-verification-and-right-access-information

This thread makes for a bit of a heartwarming story. Gotta love mastodon's serendipity at work.
I'm loving how we have NIS2 and the Cyber Resilience Act in effect, and how at the same time people are just letting AI generate entire applications.
I'm sure it's all perfectly secure and compliant.
Contract @ customer is ending (finally). Instead of spending my last months on something useful (e.g. knowledge transfer), they want me to spend it on taking "compliance training".
It's apparently incredibly important. So important that they couldn't be bothered to hire anyone to make it, and have instead AI generated a bunch of piss poor video trainings.
Why is the corporate world such a joke?
Periodic checkin: who is hiring that doesn't force developers to use AI for writing code?

Had to drop everything to help out a meat proxy with a deployment issue. They wanted me to review their LLM output because "it didn't feel right", and boy were they right about that ... the thing hallucinated a service that didn't exist, would have removed production config without taking a backup, and was confusingly verbose:
> "Excute a, b en d before step 6, e and f after step 9"
... WHAT ABOUT "c", Claude? What a fucking shitshow.
This is not how I wanted to spend my day.

It's a strange world where I find myself rooting for Adobe and agreeing with a pope.
Anyone with open commissions who wants to do some #art for NetBSD?
We've got a budget for paying for some concept art and can later talk about working with you on some merch. DM us!
Naturally, we cannot accept contributions using generative AI.
Back home from Devoxx. For the past ~20 years, that's been the conference highlight of the year. This is the first time I've come home deflated and depressed.
Clearly I have some introspection to do. Would be nice if the rest of the industry did some of that as well, instead of just fucking shit up.
Small BOF at Devoxx about the future of open source software in the face of AI was very depressing. Opinions included small projects being dead, new projects being very hard, that maybe projects should open specs instead of sources and generate code instead, or that projects should no longer accept source patches but only spec patches.
I did like the suggestion that AI generated patches should include the prompts + models used.
I need a beer.
@kepano I owe you a beverage of your choosing.
You've made me very happy with "Improved fuzzy search in the quick switcher and suggestions. Matches where your letters start words now rank higher.". Thats one of my biggest pest peeves in search everywhere.
For all the love it gets in political/selfhosted circles, Nextcloud is such a piece of shit. PHP on top of WebDAV. Slow as balls unless you pile on a cache. Look at it funny and all your files are locked. Administering it is ridiculously tedious. It still doesn't handle user-specific timezones correctly in many cases.
I use it. But I wish I didn't have to.
EU Internet Providers don't wait until Trump disables your toplevel domain (.eu .uk .fr .de .it .nl etc.) and run this script on your DNS server to sync the American nameless root DNS zones to your local DNS server and resolve from it and protect your citizens.
The script automatically syncs and converts your BIND9 DNS server to locally host the American controlled nameless root zone "." holding all our country based top-level domains and resolve from a local copy.

Fun with DuckDB @ #devoxx ❤️
Have we come up with better pronouns and other terminology for AI yet? Stuff that's less anthropomorphic? Tired of hearing people referring to e.g. Claude output as "he said foo". There is no "he", and it didn't "say" jack shit.
"Software developers are not okay"

The software industry is becoming increasingly hostile to those who work in it. The uncertainty is affecting even those who believe in the promises of tech.
