Hi I am new to Mastodon, I don't really know what I am doing here yet. Does anyone know of any cool nonprofits or gamedev people to follow? Currently my feed is just the internet archive. I love that, but it might not lead to a very satisfying experience.
@withinity I follow a few gamedev and art people.
I am on mobile, so I can't add links atm, but if you like anti-ai and fantasy comics I would look at David Revoy
Alblune Studios and one of their devs Luca made and is updating a fun rat picross/house maker called Squeakross: Home Squeak Home
Georgina Bensly (I may have the spelling wrong sorry) if you want to hear about a steam curator trying to find yuri games.
Vintage Story is a fun game to look into that has a Mastodon account too.
@VANTABlack2000 Thank you! I don't know what a yuri game is, I might be getting old. Everyone else looks great! Really appreciate it. Also, you have a cool user name.

May 27, 2026, 1:51 PM@withinity @gemini0 welcome to fedi!
@eniko Thank you!
@withinity Welcome! I recommend following the #gamedev hashtag for finding folks, if no one else has suggested it already.
@dasparky No one has suggested it yet thank you!
@withinity The @Exilian feed might be of interest? :)
@JubalBarca @Exilian Looks like a nice blend of both things! Thank you
@withinity You can also follow hashtags on here, like #GameDev for instance, so you'll see any posts that use that tag.
@denny Thank you for the tip!
I've got over 700 people I'm following, so it might be hard to pick few (and to be completely honest, I don't remember most of them what they do/their hobies, just know most of them are awesome 😊)
It's good idea to follow some HashTags like #GameDev / #IndieGameDev or #NonProfit in your case.
I hope you'll find it here friendly and more relaxing than most of the internet, not even talking about other social networks.😬
https://fediview.com/articles/mastering-mastodon-hashtags-visibility-2026/
@FandaSin Thanks FandaSin :). So far so good. I was looking for places to escape 90% AI written advertisements/engagement posts. So far mastodon has a lot of the "old internet" vibe too it. I like it.
I didn't realize you could follow hashtags thank you for the tip!
@withinity I recommwnd checking out @eniko and @molegato
They're cool gamedev folks
@kde is also a cool digital nonprofit dev team
@withinity @vampiress is a good indie game dev follow!
@Trenton_Hoshiko @vampiress Thank you!
@withinity happy to help a little! And welcome! :)
@Trenton_Hoshiko @withinity @vampiress beat me to it! Also @lisamelton for someone who is ‘the algorithm’ she boosts good stuff from anywhere and everywhere. A great place to find other follows.
@withinity follow @FediTips for advice on how to make friends here. Welcome.
@ailurocrat @FediTips Thank you it looks like they have some nice blogs. I tried doing a few searches and got a little lost.
@withinity @FediTips regularly posts lists of interesting people/orgs/topics to follow
Follow hashtags more than people.
@Perrin42 Noted! Thanks for the tip
May 27, 2026, 1:56 PMAlso I recommend putting in a profile picture. Just something you like from your recent photos, doesn't need to be anything particularly good as a profile picture. It will make people more likely to accept follow requests.
@gbargoud I was just thinking about that. I updated my description. I'll have to think of something :).
May 27, 2026, 1:59 PM@withinity @gbargoud cat pics always welcome in this place, lol.
@VCP good because I have thousands!!!
@withinity Welcome!
I want to second the suggestion for using hashtags. That's probably the fastest way to find like-minded folks and start feeling like part of a community. Some interesting people I follow are @grumpygamer @glassbottommeg @0xabad1dea @bitbraindev @foone @yiningkarlli
@IngloGamesDev Thank you for the recommendations and the welcome!
May 27, 2026, 2:57 PMFirst off, Welcome! Hope you have fun!
I'll also add that when you first join it can help to Follow Frequently. As you add folk, you'll see what they boost, and the comments they leave for others, and that can really grow your network. You can easily drop folk later if you want (they'll never know).
You can also follow #hashtags,(@trending can show you what folk are talking about, but be advised, Japanese folk love hashtags ;) ) Your instances local or trending timeline can also help you discover folk or tags.
Hope you find some groups to enjoy.
@jrconlin Thank you for the advice. I like the idea of mass adding people then slowly removing if I want to later. Should get some good content. Everyone here has been super helpful, I really appreciate it
Came here to basically say the same thing. Follow for any reason, unfollow for same. You've already discovered following hash tags.
Just tend the garden. Read what you like. Follow folks who day interesting things. If you see an account sending stuff that doesn't spark joy, unfollow.
Your feed will grow over time to shape to your tastes, but without agenda.
Is very much unlike most of the socials out there.
Welcome!
@pseudonym Thanks for the advice. I like the "without agenda" part. Everyone has been so welcoming
@withinity welcome!
I recommend searching hashtags of anything you are interested in. Once you find your people, you can see who they interact with, to see if you are interested in their posts, too. I know nothing of gamedev, except from reading the book Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, by Gabrielle Zevin.
It was easier for me, because I migrated from the birdsite and already knew a lot of people here. I still looked for posts with keywords like art, books, politics, all of the sciences, history, etc. (I have a very wide range of interests.)
I hope you'll stick around. It took me a while to get a great feed, but once I followed enough accounts, it really shaped up. I love how smart, witty, and insightful the people are here. A whole social media platform of people who are well-informed. And almost anyone here will gladly help.
@kimlockhartga Thanks Kim Possible :). I plan on being here for a while. There are some really neat people on here.
I am really surprised by how many people suggested people to me. I feel like I have a nice list already :D
@withinity yay! And love your profile pic.
Welcome to Fedi. I only have a small list of follows but @sci_burst do science + culture, including games. @alice is an all-round Fedi star and can be a gateway to lots of others.
@pluralistic is on here and is excellent on all things tech.
@withinity otherwise I follow a bunch of authors, and you'll also find that lots of techy organisations and companies are on here (eg @eff )
I also follow @FediTips for tips on how to do the Fediverse.
May 27, 2026, 3:42 PM@withinity
@Hempuli is always doing cool stuff
@phooky Super cool the creator of BabaIsYou is on here :D. Thank you for the suggestion!
@withinity Fediverse recommendation algorithm here. Follow @spritely and @grumpygamer
@djoerd Cool! Thank you for the suggestions.
May 27, 2026, 4:41 PM@withinity welcome! you've joined the right server for meeting game devs! i recommend you checking out the local timeline during peak hours to see what everyone's up to
@aeva Thanks for the tip :) I haven't seen the local timeline yet but I will check it out soon
May 27, 2026, 5:41 PM@withinity The local timeline is hidden away under the "Live feeds" button on the sidebar if you're using the web interface.
Peak hours (as I'm able to observe them) are generally around morning to noon on week days in the Americas and in European time zones, and the most significant peaks are during the day on Saturdays. There's no magic recommendation algorithm here so the way to get eyes on something is to post it when people are active (and to post to hashtags people follow).
@withinity Welcome to the neighbourhood!
@withinity
@withinity
@HadroSoft
@ClarusPlusPlus
She is developing a side scrolling game loosely based on Zelda 2. The demo for Enigma Hearts is out, and I've heard great things. Can't wait until I can find the time to play it. That's a good place to begin, I'd say.
@meadow
I've gotten started on the demo, it's awesome and difficult to put aside! 😆
The story is so deeply connected with everything you do, and the gameplay is challenging. Though you can do what I did and adjust the difficulty to something more easygoing. I'm enjoying the story, and exploring.
@jwarlander @meadow @withinity @HadroSoft Aw, thanks! 💜
How are the difficulty settings working out for you, by the way? Does the gameplay still feel engaging? One of my biggest worries going into the demo release was the fact that I'm so good at the game now and that I was making it too hard for most other people (and whether it'd still be fun if adjusted) 😅
@ClarusPlusPlus
So far it's been a good balancing act - engaging, sometimes a *little* frustrating (timing jumps between tiny disappearing platforms while avoiding enemies that swoop down from the ceiling 🤣), but entirely manageable since I can heal up & save at cave entrances etc!
Use hashtags, they will come.
The trick of Mastodon is its artisanal, hand crafted, no algorithm to steer your posts.
Hashtags and follows and boosts are the rocket sleds of engagement.
@kevinrns I like that. Instead of getting algorithmed into weird crap its actually what the people I'm connected with like. Great concept :). Thank you
Hi Withinity, welcome!
