I read some post about how Mastodon consists primarily of German-speaking creatures talking in English. I'm gonna do a poll, need to test that. Boosts highy appreciated!

So, do you speak German?

So, one of the moments I enjoy greatly is when you brain unlocks a concept. I've been poking at Rust and Axum a bit, also using SeaORM for the database side of things. I want to store some PostGIS stuff related to airports but I don't want to screw around in the code too much trying to manage the types... so I made my own Rust type and they just work. This is what Claude and other AI tools take away from me. The struggle is part of learning and without it, you never actually understand what you're doing.

Not that I perfectly understand things, mind you. It is important to test your assumptions and keep refining your mental model of how things work. This understanding allows you to accomplish great things and, much like puzzles, gives the intellectual satisfaction of solving things.

More to do! Always more to do. I'm trying to setup a whole thing here so I can make light up METAR map wall art. Ideally I can setup the maps in a nice UI with LED layouts, the rust code can generate the files the cnc machine will use to cut holes and also let the devices (separate rust codebase of mine) query my backend to get their weather, which I can figure out from the map layout they are using.

This is mostly just a project for learning a few different things (embedded rust, rust apis, postgis, godot rust) and it is tying together nicely so far. I'm figuring out weird pitfalls as I go, things that Spring Boot has spoiled me for that Axum and Rust do not. On the flip side of that, there are features I really wish Java had in here (and I miss Kotlin but that is a whole separate post).

It is nice to feel joy in programming again, I haven't felt that in a long while.

Now I need to figure out my data models and how to better utilize those between my controller <-> service <-> repo layers in a way that isn't so repetitive.

Other fun is I have a nice docker-compose setup to run the full stack. I figure I'll have my server eventually pull from self-hosted git and build the image, then deploy itself. I ran the server all day to let it soak a bit when fetching METARs and it worked great. Again, very satisfying to do it all myself.

Hello fine people of Mastodon!

I'm Frank: a soil ecologist, popular-science author, nature macrophotographer, university lecturer and science communicator (and exhausterwhelmed new father). Through my research and outreach, I'm determined to raise awareness of the tiny organisms that keep our soils (and our world) working!

As a reward for putting up with all my book promotion, please feast your eyes upon this smörgåsbord of Tasmanian 'dragon' springtails!

These outrageous creatures are related to the New Zealand giant springtails that I've been utterly obsessed with for the past three years. I'm so pleased that I got the opportunity to visit Hobart at the weekend to go on a dragon hunt!

That's not all I saw, however: I'll be adding more photos very soon, including fluffy mites and Tasmanian velvet worms 😮

If you have a GameCube sitting in your closet collecting dust, this video is for you. It may be old, but it more than likely still works. You just need to fix it.

Three timeline functions in #Fedilab that some might not know:
1. Long-press on standard or list timelines for additional filters (for example, self-replies). (see image)
2. Long-press on a hashtag to follow or filter it.
3. Long-press on interaction buttons to interact using another account of yours (if you have only two, you will not be asked which account to use; quotes are not supported yet - see issue 121).

I am missing a couple hundred subscriptions on YouTube to break the 10k barrier. Can we get my channel across this magical number?

Hey you. It's all kinda a lot right now, isn't it, with all the everythings.

I can't tell you that it's all going to be ok, although I sure hope it is.

But I can tell you that I'm glad you're here. That you deserve happiness and love.

It's ok to take a quiet moment from the chaos. Take some deep breaths. Drink a glass of water. Eat something. Listen to your favorite song.

And remember that some old queer on the Fedi is rooting for you.

Am trapped.

I'm not the world's greatest Mastodonian so I'm a little nervous about this, but I'm going to try it -- #getFediHired

My tagline: "I bring people together in new ways to solve problems no one thought they could."

That has meant lots of things: strategist, facilitator, advisor, researcher, coach. I'm well-versed in health care, social welfare, and philanthropy, but I've done deep dives into all sorts of other fields too.

I've solved problems for lots of organizations you've heard of, but for the better part of two decades, I've done it as a solopreneur or as part of small companies and nonprofits.

For many job applications that has been a liability... I'd like to find the employer for whom it's an asset. I don't need hand-holding or an instruction manual. I've been finding my way in the dark my whole career. Now I'd like to do it as part of a team.

I've found ways to express that in plenty of different job applications, but here's my website designed to reach the person who wants my help but hasn't created that job listing yet. Here's hoping I'm the one for you.

🇩🇪 Today we celebrate #GermanUnityDay – a victory over oppression & mass surveillance.

But history warns us: #ChatControl could bring surveillance back at a scale East Germany could only have dreamed of.

Let’s defend freedom & say NO to #ChatControl! ✊

Some problems are best solved immediately. Others need to sit quietly in a corner until they understand what they have done. Eventually they may request a biscuit. #gooderliving

Whoa.

The silk dress took 14+ years to complete.

Worked on by 380 embroiderers from 51 countries who contributed an estimated billion and a half stitches.

"They included female refugees from Palestine, Syria and Ukraine, women seeking asylum in the UK from Iran, Iraq, China, Nigeria and Namibia, survivors of war in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Rwanda and impoverished and disadvantaged women in South Africa, Mexico and Egypt."
