the awkward part of this post is that if these companies improve the performance of their websites it will change the meaning of the post (since those filmstrips update over time)

so far I’m about 5% worried about it

@zachleat You're absolutely right, and I sincerely apologize for my earlier response. I was too eager with the plusses. I appreciate you calling me out on this and I running away screaming. I will remove one plus from my original message:

A+++++++++++++++ passive aggressive animations, would replay again

Lots of people “want to make software”, it’s almost not even a Venn Diagram when you also show the much smaller circle of people who “want to make good software”. 🫠

@zachleat Love the new compare feature. The filmstrip is very cool. It’s impressive to see new features added to what already began as a comprehensive resource. Any plans to add more sites to the comparison?

@damianwalsh I didn’t apply filmstrips and comparisons to the Built Awesome category for resource (file size) reasons on the site. I think it’s possible to readd it back in at some point but I just want to take care there as this site does pressure GitHub’s free tier 😅

@zachleat Ah-ha—yeah, wondered if something like that could be a thing. It’d be interesting even if it were just the top three in each category. Even at the top of the table, some of the comparisons across categories are pretty wild.

@zachleat I'm not saying this to absolve any of these companies but do you know if there is an available comparison for these sites for when you start using the different services? Anecdotally it always seems like the homepages are the worst offenders because that's were all the tracking BS gets stuffed but its not people who use the sites go to everyday.

@McNeely ah, I don’t think I’m trying to make that point. The point I am trying to make here is that we aren’t at the level of automation that will craft good quality (and good quality is still important)

but to your point, I don’t know! It doesn’t seem like that could be measurable (if I understand you correctly)

@zachleat totally makes sense. One of my thoughts is that we will never see *any* meaningful movement here as long as the industry standard practice is to stuff homepages full of trackers. So in a sense I'm not even sure this is a "tools" problem.

@McNeely I’ve heard that question before and I’ve thought about it a lot. But this is the relationship that automation has with quality that I’m trying to get folks to look at more closely! My take is that some tools have a pit of success and some have a pit of failure and a good dev can make a bad tool fast but the real impact comes from defaults!

@zachleat I'm still believe that there are tasks for the AI and tasks for human that way. I'm still have projects with no AI entangled for the frontend design.

@iamdtms @zachleat Layout optimization engines exist, but those are reliant on tracking all website visitors (to increase the sales goals). For solving other tasks, humans are most often better match.

I remember listening a presentation from university teacher on how their university research group increased real money gambling income (of the state-owned slot machine monopoly) by doing UI layout optimization of the machines, with real user interaction data. It felt bad to be on the audience.

@autiomaa @zachleat Actually, CSS quick fixes for humans are easier and cheaper still. But I'll check ChatGPT-6 Astra, okay.

@zachleat sometimes it's hard convincing clients more data, more integrations, more AI is not better. But, measurable and tangible results like this are very useful for that. (And sometimes to a fault, but having tools to support your argument in front of a client is a must.)

@zachleat I think it'd be perfectly fair to lock those filmstrips to the publication date for that reason.

But I also doubt they'll actually fix their performance issues, too.
