Also people were saying this about the "low code revolution"

I'm not real convinced the SaaS pocalypse is going to actually occur because part of the reason you buy a thing is so that someone who *isn't your team* is responsible for keeping it up and the data safe and the code funcional.

Like yes I know the oneshotted llm enjoyers think the machine spits out golden eggs if you touch it in just the right way but, like, no.

Gonna just rant here instead:

The LLMs have *already* caused societal harm you absolute knobhead what the hell is wrong with you! You're ignoring the downsides because you think the machine can make you more productive (it can't!) and you feel good about every pull of the slot lever.

Gods. Grow some self awareness.

You know what, no, I'm just going to block the guy saying "llms 'could' cause harm" and I'm gonna move on with my day.

(I already replied and thought better of it, dang my lack of self control)

I gotta remember that while the boosters say "all software will be LLM developed, you can't avoid it" that NetBSD crushed its funding goal, LibreOffice got record downloads, more people are contributing to Redox, and so on.

It's far from impossible, even if it may feel that way (freakin' Linux kernel grumble grumble)

"Searching for programming language concepts sucks now, you have to use an LLM, checkmate AI Opponents" is a really bizarre take to me.

Like, documentation exists, books exist, Google sucks now and the LLM is unpredictably wrong so like, uh, I am not having this problem?

My stack is becoming this interesting (read: sad) jenga tower of projects that do not accept slop that have upstreams which do (Asahi -> Fedora -> Linux kernel) and I am mitigating what I can by carefully managing what deps I accept but gods the landscape is filled with "just a little slop we promise"

Cosmic DE and both Niri+Noctalia work pretty well on Asahi, turns out

Also I keep a general eye on non-OSS vendor pricing, and it's kinda astonishing how Auth0 just up and adopted the "AI Purple" aesthetic:

But hey, at least Cognito's probably slop free because Amazon has likely completely forgotten that Cognito exists.

I should not be surprised that several OSS CIAM projects now have fairly permissive LLM contribution policies but I uhh, really don't like the idea of letting a stochastic text generator touching the login portion of your site.

But what do I know?

Storytelling Collective (who does not have a native fedi presence) has just published In a Flash Vol 4: https://www.drivethrufiction.com/en/product/585931/in-a-flash-volume-iv?affiliate_id=3026970 (Affiliate link is the publisher's, not mine)

I've got a piece in there if you're into spooky season rhyming stories.

PoD version is not yet live but is coming.

I have seen examples where it did something akin to:

`let string = "this-is-a-string".replace(" ", "-")` complete with hard coded string and a replacement that'd never replace anything. Is the string the correct output? Sure? What's that replace doing there?

(Edit: This was during a code review I was obliged to perform, I do not prompt the slop machine myself)

"These things are good at generating code" is a phrase that makes me think that you do not review the output of the code generating hell machine.

For example, Muse's had a shell script who's usage example is (working from memory of @jonny 's thread) `print_home_dir.sh <default home dir>` that was literally just an `echo /hard/coded/dir`...which is just consumed by several other shell scripts in the environment, and included a big "AND NOTHING ELSE" in it. It's peak stupid.

So to synthesize a ton of threads... 1300+ CVEs were issued, but no one has verified that all of those are *actually* security issues or are just bugs, thus rendering the CVE system meaningless?

Right?

In Daft Punk's seminal work "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" Faster is the second-least important attribute behind Harder and Better, more important than only Stronger.

In this essay I will.....

PERFECT BIRD TIME

I wonder if we can just skip the middleman (thus avoiding having to prompt muse) and just get at the juicy juicy free compute directly.

It's getting close to Extra Life season again and I've got my tentative lineup for this year:
https://dd.extra-life.org/participants/cthos

I'll be streaming on my own infra again (like a foolish fool) so I'll be testing that again in the leadup.

If anyone has ideas for milestone incentives... you let me know.

The whole feeling I'm getting from all of these OSS projects going with the vibes is that there's a concerted industry push and that makes me more suspicious of that.
