CLIR has a project, “Digitizing Hidden Collections”, which offers grants for non-profits to document America's “hidden” histories. It spotlights underserved communities, and stories of people in a digitally-connected format.

Dr. Muraco runs a beaver refuge and posts nice videos of her beaver interactions. She recently did a talk about her work and the behavioural science of beavers.
One interesting bit is beavers have very capable little hands. It's not the first thing you think of, but they can easily pick up food and eat with their hands.

Next gotta learn how font designers actually work because I'm probably doing a few things incorrectly. But, experimenting was fun.

Latest fun side project has been to make a font.

I use #Inkscape for everything, so when I saw they had a Typeface template, I wanted to give it a try. I drew letters on paper, scanned them in. In Inkscape I found it more effective to use the “fill” tool than to use “Trace Bitmap.” One counter-intuitive thing with Inkscape is you're not supposed to use pages, only layers.

After creating the glyphs in Inkscape, I was able to import the SVG in FontForge and then export it as a font file. #Design

Though had to cheat with the Bookwyrm icon by using a book, I could not find a way to make their logo work.

I made a solid color version of their logo, I tried just showing the dragon's head, but at the smaller scale it just didn't look right and the head look a bit weird. #Design

Ooh #Speedlify got a big update.

This year I moved away from emojis and web safe fonts, following a new design for my personal site. It goes for a more unique feel that heavily relies on SVGs. After selecting fonts I thought were interesting (Luciole & Rakkas), I found a tool to prune the characters I don't use, taking them down to ~10 KB each.

Seems to have paid off, made it into the top 100 on the leaderboard. 😁 #WebDev

#LanguageTool went paid, seems like they're pivoting to AI. Compared to Grammarly, I was quite happy with LanguageTool, so this was disappointing news.

However, it made me aware of another grammar extension, “Harper.” Which is a younger #grammar extension with a focus on privacy and performance.

Nebula.TV is looking for a Backend Engineer - Remote (USA).
I don't work at Nebula, just sharing because they seem like a fairly ethical company with a good work-life balance.

Stumbled into these 3 sunbathing on a rock yesterday. #Connecticut #Nature

I was reading about the Rhesus Monkey on #Wikipedia, it's the most geographically diverse non-human primate, taking up residence across Asia. They're also widely used for medical research due to availability and low upkeep.

What's also very cool is that Wikipedia has a 3D model of one's skeleton that you can interact with.

While admiring the 3D model, I noticed a dot near the center.

This led me down a rabbit-hole looking at the incredible photography of Vivian Maier. She was a prolific street photographer from the 20th century. #Photography
