    RE: neighborhood.11ty.dev/@11ty/11

Ooh #Speedlify got a big update.

This year I moved away from emojis and web safe fonts, following a new design for my personal site. It goes for a more unique feel that heavily relies on SVGs. After selecting fonts I thought were interesting (Luciole & Rakkas), I found a tool to prune the characters I don't use, taking them down to ~10 KB each.

Seems to have paid off, made it into the top 100 on the leaderboard. 😁 #WebDev

My personal site at rank #81 on the Speedlify leaderboard, showing perfect scores across all lighthouse metrics and no AXE accessibility issues. The leaderboard contains about 1,500 websites with about 150 of them with perfect scores.

Though had to cheat with the Bookwyrm icon by using a book, I could not find a way to make their logo work.

I made a solid color version of their logo, I tried just showing the dragon's head, but at the smaller scale it just didn't look right and the head look a bit weird. #Design

The section of my website that shows my social media list, with Bookwyrm highlighted. Each social platform has a logo, but for Bookwyrm I used a generic book icon as I couldn't get the dragon to look good. My username on Bookwyrm is @chris-hayes on the official server.
The official Bookwyrm logo. It's a somewhat detailed dragon, that uses multiple blues and greens, and features a book in the center.

@autiomaa I used the CLI tool, `fonttools`, which has a `fonttools subset` feature. I used it with the flag `--unicodes="U+0020-007E"` to only retain ASCII characters (no accents, no em dashes, no fancy quotes, etc).

In the future I'll probably tweak what character are included as I like to use proper quotation marks.

I did a little post here about it: nutmeg.social/@chris/116661740

@chris Interesting. I think I could try to make a Podman-based container for fonttools, so that it could be used without having to install those dependencies directly to the host system. Or I could add the font subsetting task to the existing container that builds my 11ty based site, so that it could be automated as a part of the build process, if needed.
