    Dear fedi I'm livid. An acquaintance of mine almost finished college and after doing an *unpaid* six months internship was offered a follow-up contract for less than 500€ a month. If you wonder why European young people are mad that's pretty much why.

    I'll be doing anything in my power to make sure he'll never work there so if you have an opening or internship for a young person starting his career let me know.

    He'll finish the equivalent of a bachelor in computer science in May next year, has done some six months of hands-on work in security and is one hell of a worker. I can personally vouch for him. He's based in Italy and can do both in-person and remote work, and might be able to relocate to the NL and possibly the UK if need be.

    Boosts appreciated.

    @gabrielesvelto the real problem is that even if your friend doesn't accept (and I think they shouldn't, it's honestly an offensive offer even for a stage) there will be someone who accepts.

    The company will be convinced thus that it works and will keep doing that, without understanding that they are hiring the worse ones that can't find anything better and that's exactly why their productivity and quality sucks and thus don't have enough business to afford better people.

    It's sadly a cycle

    @zbrown 20 hours/week, I think it might also be illegal or borderline legal. I already directed him to someone who could check on that.

    @gabrielesvelto @zbrown
    ok, that definitely is exploitative.

    probably legal though, according to Wikipedia Italy doesn't have minimum wage; and even if they did, about 6€/h is the minimum wage in Portugal or Cyprus (other examples from German Wikipedia: Germany 12.82€, Spain 8.37€, Greece 5.60€, Hungary 4.23€, USA 6.70€)

    @Doomed_Daniel @gabrielesvelto from what I could grasp earlier there's no singular minimum, but there is some system, albeit seemingly weak, that much as our former Wage Councils did sets out industry specific minimum conditions — but I don't speak Italian, so there were limited sources I could look at

    I suppose local cost of living is variable, but even so I'd have thought everywhere would have got to at least 8 if not 10 by now 😬

    @zbrown @Doomed_Daniel yes, there is no global minimum but there are minimums for specific contract types. In his case an entry-level contract for an IT professional would net him at least 1500€ which is still not much by EU standards, but you can see just how much they're ripping him off.

    @gabrielesvelto Internship..

    I did a full time study that costs quite a lot but I also made over 2100 hours internship since it was required. That’s also 2100 hours unpaid fulltime work + study costs

    My two brothers did a work-study and earned quite something while studying a bit

    I may be a millennial but I’m 33 and still repaying study loans from studies I never got to use so I understand also very well

    @gabrielesvelto

    Unpaid internships are how the wealthy filter out people.

    Only the children of The Moneyed can afford to accept these no-wage and low-wage jobs.

    Barriers to entry to elite jobs take many forms.

    Preserving certain jobs for white or male candidates by creating gauntlets & hurdles.

    High tuition. High borrowing costs for student loans. Long days. Unpaid overtime. BS like "culture fitness". Burdening particular candidates with nonpromotable tasks. Unnecessary certifications.

    @sszuecs because a junior position would come with a minimum wage and they're clearly trying to rip him off

    @gabrielesvelto 500 Euros is .... that doesnt sound sustainable. Is your acquaintance just supposed to live in a cardboard box by their workplace.... or live in their car (if they even have one) ? Like.... this makes no sense (and I am not even assuming the specific cost of living over there)

    @Catwoman69y2k yes, it's shameful. I don't think that would cover even his most basic expenses in spite of him living in a relatively cheap area.

    @gabrielesvelto I hear you, that is a pitiful offer, but destroying your homes, your country and all the history, people who have put their lives into business to have it broken into and stolen is no way to accomplish your goals, it only shows what law breaking and destructive Jerks they are, the beautiful city and all it holds are destroyed what do you have to call home, burned buildings

    @admin during the protests of the past few weeks violent actions were done by a very small amount of people, not all of them young and not all of them protesters. That being said the anger is very real and tangible, violence is also living hand-to-mouth, violence is being discriminated, violence is not having access to healthcare, and violence is also being exploited
