I just released version 1.5.5 of dhewm3, a Doom3 source port: https://dhewm3.org/#dhewm3-1.5.5
Biggest changes:
- Supporting proper widescreen GUIs (instead of stretching ones meant for 4:3 or pillarboxing)
- Runs more smoothly at 60fps
- Support for BC7/BPTC textures for high-res texture packs
- new mods supported: ELDOOM, Grimm, HeXen. Edge Of Chaos, Real Gibs
- lots of bugfixes etc, see newspost for details
I wrote a blogpost about making AMD Zen3(+)-based Lenovo IdeaPads work with Linux (they have an annoying suspend/s2idle-related bug disabling the keyboard until rebooting).
It also has a section about creating ACPI fake-devices to work around "Could not resolve symbol [...], AE_NOT_FOUND" ACPI errors.
Do we now get this kind of bullshit right before every weekend?
Maybe sysadmins should work on weekends.
Like, *only* on weekends. Same pay of course.
As I haven't seen this in my timeline yet:
There is another #Linux #zeroday privilege escalation #vulnerability.
No, not copy_fail, a new one, called DirtyFrag, combining CVE-2026-43284 and CVE-2026-43500
Apparently the finder was gonna disclose this responsibly, but they claim the embargo was broken by a third party.
Most probably not patched yet in distros, but fix (at least for one of the CVEs) is in mainline.

A workaround/mitigation exists: https://github.com/V4bel/dirtyfrag#mitigation
I just realized that Doom3 is basically the opposite of Thief: In Thief you can hide in the dark from enemies (and usually you can still see them). In Doom3 you can't see shit but the monsters are hidden in the dark
(yes, there are also the soft-forks of Firefox, but I don't think I'd gain much from them - security updates probably arrive a bit later, and apparently AI features still reach their users before they get around to disabling them)
I don't think I'll stop using Firefox anytime soon.
Yes, their management are fucking idiots and it's annoying that I'll have to disable new AI features whenever they release them..
But the alternative is to use something Chromium-based, which would make Google's domination of web technology absolute - and Google is 100x more evil than Mozilla ever could be.
I hope this fucking bubble pops before Mozilla fucks up Firefox so badly that it becomes completely unusable
Oh great, Steam is fucking slow too (<200KB/s ; UPD: eventually at least got to single-digit MB/s while GOG remains super-slow) - even though I get the full gigabit speed on speed test websites.. do they use the same CDN and it's overloaded, or is this due to Vodafone's fucking peering changes ( https://www.heise.de/en/news/Vodafone-leaves-public-internet-exchange-points-11068836.html )?
Downloading from GOG.com (with webbrowser) at 75-100 KB/s - WTF
In case you haven't noticed yet, the open source idTech4-based game Skin Deep has been released and it's fucking excellent:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/301280/Skin_Deep/
It's a sneaky ImSim FPS where you play Nina Pasadena, some kind of Space-MacGyver rescuing cats from Space Pirates, using whatever you can find on the space ships to eliminate those pirates.
While it works very well with Proton (and presumably Wine), I maintain an unofficial Linux port at https://github.com/DanielGibson/SkinDeep
Anyone else got an unsolicited mail from PitchHut, whatever the fuck that is, about "showcasing" your Github project on their "platform"?
Does anyone have a collection of .dds (and maybe also .ktx and/or .ktx2) textures I could use to test my texture viewer (https://github.com/DanielGibson/texview)?
For DDS I only found test textures from GLI and unfortunately many of them are invalid/broken :-/
For KTX(2) I have the ones from libktx (and the broken ones from GLI).
Thanks in advance! :)
if anyone is interested in details of the memory usage problem: https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/extreme-growing-memory-usage-in-x11-opengl-or-vulkan-applications-after-suspend-resume/329078
Each time I run nvidia-bug-report.sh I get a kernel panic, apparently a division by 0 in the nvidia_modeset module 😑
That also causes X11 to freeze.
I can still connect to the machine with SSH and do things, but when I try to reboot it, that hangs so I need to do Alt-Sysrq+REISUB.
And I only called that script in the first place because I'm reporting a bug where OpenGL and Vulkan apps leak memory after suspend+resume.
SO MUCH FUN 🤮
I wrote a cross-platform open source texture viewer. It's still WIP, but already supports 2D textures and cubemaps in DDS, KTX and KTX2 formats and normal image files that are supported by stb_image (JPG, PNG, BMP, TGA, ...).
It allows viewing mipmap levels, also next to each other (for 2D textures).
All in a single small (<3MB) executable.
A first release is available (binaries for x86_64 Linux and Windows): https://github.com/DanielGibson/texview/releases/tag/v0.0.1
I just read that Epic Games have made the original Unreal and Unreal Tournament freeware by allowing archive.org to host ISOs (CD images) of the original installation media.
https://www.oldunreal.com/downloads/unreal/full-game-installers/ has installers that install the games from those ISOs with the OldUnreal fan patch to make them work better on modern systems.
Newspost about this: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/classic-shooters-unreal-and-unreal-tournament-are-now-free-and-preserved-on-the-internet-archive
