    Some back-logged food.

Butternut squash & orange soup - by far the favourite pumpkin/squash soup I've tried!

And on the side some flat "meatballs" (there seems to no English word for them? In German, I'd call this "Bulette" or "Frikadelle") made by partner to go as a side with the soup.

A bowl with orange soup topped with some dark pumpkin seed oil and crushed pumpkin seeds.
A plate with flat "meatballs" that look nice and fried.

@michael_w_busch meatballs are round and patties don't have the bread inside and are larger - frikadelle for sure, but a quick query with some native speakers around me (I looked it up on wikipedia and then asked around) told me that most don't know the word so my assumption is that it's just a German word used in English!

@vicgrinberg Frikadellen were one of my favorite quick Imbiss lunches when I lived in Germany in the 1980s. For lunch they'd come in a small crusty bun. I miss them almost as much as those massive schnitzel sandwiches (the main culprit behind American weight gain in the first months in Germany, along with the beer 😏 )

@Nonya_Bidniss funnily, I don't usually like frikadelle - except if partner makes them 😅 but they are indeed a typical filling for sandwich here (or rather there = Germany , since right now I'm in thr Netherlands).

@vicgrinberg You have a partner to go? Now, that is too modern for me... There must be a limit! About the food: There is an Enlish-language Wikipedia entry that calls them "frikadelles" (sic!). I think that's fair given the variability of this type of meat preparation, although even in Germany they vary so much from region to region, even by name...

@vicgrinberg in South Africa I'd also call that a frikadel, even if I was otherwise entirely speaking English. I can't think of an English word for them either.

@vicgrinberg it most certainly does. It's an Afrikaans word, which is derived from 17th century Dutch as spoken when Dutch settlers came here. It had never occured to me that I didn't know an English word for them though.

@vicgrinberg To me they look like faggots, but I imagine no American would call them that because of the meaning in US slang.

    Here's the OED definition:

"A ball or (occasionally) patty of chopped or minced meat (esp. pig's liver or other offal), mixed with bread, suet, herbs, etc., and sometimes wrapped in caul fat."

There's probably quite a bit of regional variation about what's supposed to go in them. I think there are other local dialect names for them, but I can't remember those.
