    ARGH i am angry and it's about AI and people not doing their jobs.

    i tried to buy a postage label the other day. for a non-EU country, so customs documentation required. i entered all the info, but when the label printed out, it was formatted as if for the EU and included no customs info at all. it was, therefore, useless and illegal.

    i contacted the postal service, explained what had happened, and sent an image of the label so they could see.

    i received a copy-paste reply today.
    "you have contacted us for information about customs requirements for international parcels" followed by a paragraph telling me that EU parcels didn't need customs forms but foreign parcels did.

    FUCKING.

    no human can have read my mail. no human, nevermind the name at the bottom of the reply, can have replied to my mail. so i have now replied back, tersely, and attached the image again. we shall see.

    but like.
    people are losing their jobs to AI, but some people aren't even doing the jobs they still have and are just letting the AIs go to town and that's so twistedly wrong that i can't even.

    @Rhube it really is. the combination of people literally giving their jobs to AI plus the AI doing such a shit job at the jobs and that being totally fine with everyone (but the customers, obviously!) just floors me.

    @moonrabbit @Rhube I don't know if this is in the media there, but in the US there has been talk about people 'quiet quitting'. It means that they are getting paid so badly and hate their job so much, but can't give them up because they have to eat, so they just do the absolute least they can. It's a very sad state of affairs. It makes all the customers furious and yet there's a part of me that understands because these people are getting paid like crap.

    @Star12Mt @Rhube
    quite possibly. and here, it's *quite* difficult to fire someone in a permanent position.

    there was, for example, the woman at the post office who would turn off the lights and lock the doors when she saw customers coming but carried on in that role for at least a few years of doing that ...

    that all said, the people working for the postal service are likely (although not certain) to be getting a decent wage (comparatively) and decent benefits, so.

    (i've had a similar useless reply situation with a gov't office where i'm quite sure people are making more than most, so it's not just angst.)

    either way though, SIGH.

    @moonrabbit @Rhube Actually you are quite right about the Postal Service. I guess I was thinking of private jobs. It's wild that she could get away with that for so long. Over the years my husband has told me stories about things people do and never get fired and I don't understand.

    once you have a particular contract (public or private sector, same deal), you're pretty much untouchable. it's known as the unicorn 😂

    @Rhube @Star12Mt
    french gov't employees, at least in some departments, are renowned for having decent (comparatively) conditions. i wouldn't/didn't say well, no, but comparatively decent.

    who knows, maybe things have changed, but i don't suspect the reason for the reply i got is quiet quitting. but i could be wrong!

    @Star12Mt @moonrabbit I honestly think that's bull. 'Quiet quitting' is literally just doing your contracted work instead of killing yourself while underpaid. It is not the fault of service workers that they're being replace by AI. They have no choice in that.

    i posted the other day about how my husband's clients are now asking him not only for whatever they need but also for a "roadmap" that they can give to AI so that it can do any future iterations of his work for them. which is just. not.

    @moonrabbit It makes me so angry. And all foisted on us by tech billionaires that need to find some way to keep stock prices going up, even though they are not delivering more value.

    As a writer - hell, even as someone who used to do customer service - when I think of the minutiae for which I was raked over the coals, but this bullshit isn't reputation damaging? This doesn't damage the brand?

    And then, as a customer myself, fighting this empty, useless tech to do the things I need to... 🤬

    @Rhube very very same. and yes, i'd be certain that it does damage the brand, but when it's the postal service (or the gov't) and people literally have no other choice, what does it even matter? 😡😭

    @moonrabbit So fucking!

    Maybe let them know that you literally create minions in fire so maybe they should stop fucking around unless they want to find out. 🔥

    @troublewithwords ooh good idea! not that they'd read my e-mail telling them that ... 🤣

    good thursday to you, friend. how it goes? :Blobhaj_Heart_Rainbow:

    @moonrabbit If they don't read it, send in the minions! With or without travel papers! They must be made to confront their nonsense! (It's not the good kind of nonsense!)

    It goes. If this week is going to persist, than so am I. (I hope.)

    @moonrabbit
    So sorry about what you're going through with this lovely! Morning! I fell asleep shortly after that.
    I'm only 1 week in on 6 weeks titrating up the LDN. I might have had some minor side effects, but nothing really bad. No drastic change. It's nice not sneezing, but I need to see some relief from fatigue or it's not worth it.

    @autoperipatetikos ha i sneeze so many times/day. i'm glad you're getting some relief from that at least, but yeah without relief from the things that are actually affecting your quality of life ...

    hopefully you'll see more improvement as you go up 🍀 :Blobhaj_Heart_Rainbow:

    @loubadour ugghhh. they're so shit. this was delivengo ... i finally got through to a human in the end who told me without telling me that they've changed how labels generate but not told anyone, and that i could've found the forms i needed (that usually generate with the label) if only i went here, there, and here. they refused to reimburse me and then sent me a customer satisfaction survey! they're consistently awful.
