Hello Masto-techies, I need phone advice. My Oppo A53 had been ok for 5 years or so but it's dying. Poor battery life and random crashes. I'd prefer a 'non Google' OS. In the past I've used Lineage but what's the current favourite? Also which phones are easy to root and install an OS on? Pixels seem to be highly recommended which is ironic. @TCMuffin Fair phone is tempting, but expensive. Has anyone got one and if so, what do you think? Will it for example run Android banking apps?

@pthane @TCMuffin My son has one and it keeps falling to bits but he can buy the new bits. I think he uses a regular android banking app.

@Janet_52square @TCMuffin Thanks. I've discovered Murena (Fair Phone makers) also sell refurb Pixels with /e/os installed. A cheaper option for me I think.

@pthane @TCMuffin I have a fairphone 6 with /e/os from murena, delivered to the uk within 2 days of order, had it about 2 months now
Had no problems with it, its done everything I've asked
On a full charge it lasts about 2 days, charges in about 2 hours on a standard charger
I've heard reports of banking apps having problems but I've no personal experience
It's the first phone I've had where the os has updated & that took under 10 minutes over WiFi
Anything in particular you need to know ?

@staringatclouds @TCMuffin I don't think my bank has a downloadable APK for its app, my current one came from Google Play, is it possible to install apps from there without other Google services enabled?

Although I have an iPhone, I have very few apps installed.
Any website that I access via a browser on my PC/MacBook, I access via a browser on all my devices, so I wouldn't worry about not being able to download a banking app. But YMMV 🤷

@TCMuffin @staringatclouds The issue is 2fa. My bank has an app to generate a one-time code needed to log in using their website. My wife has a key pad thing instead but they are deprecated. However it looks like Micro G on /e/os allows anonymous installing of apps from the Play Store.

I still have my PINsentry and I didn't know that it was being deprecated...despite the constant "nudges" to use the app rather than a PINsentry 🤦

I've got one; it's running stock Android until I can wrench it free from Odido's clutches, but it will run /e/OS and most (but not all) EU banking apps will run on it (some need microG)... the battery seems to not run as well approaching the 18-month mark but that's replaceable, and so are other major components including most importantly the charge port...
Now, this is the 5 not the 6. I casually looked at the 6 some time ago and decided I liked the idea of the 5 better but off the cuff I couldn't tell you why. Also I don't know what kind of issues you might have getting it in the UK; it was only released to the US within the last week....
That's the good, the bad, and the ugly from where I sit...
