okay, I finally got in, here’s how it went:

attempt 1: code delivered in 17 minutes
attempt 2: gave up waiting for it after an hour
attempt 3: code delivered in 20 seconds

@ticky and youll have to hit resend five times. and the code you get when you hit resend will be a new code, not the one you needed, so the form wont accept it

No no but what's really great, is when you're trying to log in to something from an email on your PHONE, so when it sends you the code in an email and you go to open it, it closes the email where you needed to put in the code and if you open it again the code you just got is no longer valid, and it wants to send you ANOTHER code in an inescapable goddamn loop.

@ticky One of my relatives couldn't activate the phone banking app because the SMS activation code was only valid for 60 seconds, and it took 2-3 minutes before it was delivered.

@ticky The best was Gumroad sending me the precious code a full day later.

@ticky While waiting you request another code and both arrive simultaneously at the 17min mark. You pick the one that was delivered few seconds later, it is rejected because of course you should have used the earlier one that should have been invalidated 7min ago. Doesn't matter, both of the codes are invalidated now and you need to request yet another code.

@ticky God I hate this. Then you ask for another and it arrives before the first one and who knows what code you are supposed to enter 🤷‍♂️

@ticky one of the first anti SPAM systems is called grey listing. The idea is that a normal mail server would retry after a while (15m, of course) if the remote answers with a temporary error, while a SPAMmer will just discard the email because of volume.

My mail server has this and yes, it's a PitB with those codes. It's how I learned meditation :)

@ticky our mail servers will attempt to deliver the code to you in 17 minutes but we forgot to get round to setting up our SPF so your mail provider has blocked us. again.

@ticky *Maybe* it works fine if your email is on one of the two big email servers on the internet. I can certainly confirm it doesn't work if you're on a smaller server.

@ticky Recently had the compounded joy of:

    Site: Enter username

    Me: [enters username]

Site: Would you like to log in with a password or one-time code we send to your email?

Me: Password since it's a complex 20+ character string of jibberish in my password-manager

    Site: Enter password

    Me: [has password-manager supply password]

Site: Okay, username & password are good. Now we need you to confirm with the 2FA code we just sent to your email…

    🤦

Greylisting does not play nice with short time-out messages. Not sure if that's what you saw, but I've seen it.

(Greylisting is an antispam technique where your server replies with a "try again later" response and hopes spammers won't try again.)
