… the Trump administration wants Spain to give up Ceuta, and two weeks after Congress formally agrees, Ceuta is suddenly stormed by migrants who tell the press, that rumors spread through social media that they could get to the EU this way, because the border had been breached.
Of course, this is not proof that the US caused this. But it certainly is a suspicious sequence of events which I intend to keep an eye on.

It is much more likely that they will be targeted by long range 'effectors'. And I personally would not like to be China's collateral damage.
@randahl When or if the US turn back to a reasonably normal democratic nation, they will still be eyed with suspicion. The damage they have done to international relations, especially with their former allies thrown under the bus so swiftly and willingly, will be felt for decades.

The chance to *start* rebuilding trust came in 2021 and would have required a long term course correction. In 2025 we pulled off our masks and revealed pirates were still so the helm.
We've now proven that any agreement signed with the US, any alliances made, etc. have a shelf life of exactly how long that particular leader is still in office and no longer.
No government or people, liberal or conservative, should ever trust us to do anything long-term again.

The way we're spending money and on what just isn't stuff states that intend to remain in DCs orbit would be burning money on. Our energy grid is going all clean, water reclamation megaprojects in the central valley, we built the largest aerial firefighting fleet in the world, MIGHT create our own space agency, housing for homeless...yeah.

With Ceuta Spanish, Spain controls the Strait of Gibraltar from both sides. Sure, Ceuta makes for a land border between the EU and Africa. It would be easier to ‘defend’ ‘Fortress Europe’ against the ‘hordes of illegal immigrants’ (pardon my language) if the border were the Strait instead of the Ceuta outpost. But I reckon that controlling access to the Mediterranean and Black Sea outweighs dealing with a wave of immigrants every once in a while. That is the sensible reasoning.
For the other approach: MAGA wants to destroy Europe from within. Refugees are the perfect means to drive up tensions, because they give the far right kindling to stoke up the fires of discontent. So Ceuta in Spanish hands suits MAGA fine: it’s guaranteed to keep stirring up trouble, both within and between EU countries. It plays into their hands. They are not really going to try to change that.
@gimulnautti @randahl I think that they would like to make Europe irrelevant to the US. We have nothing they want and we have lots of things they don’t want. The only thing we are to them is a market for their stuff and they want us to bow to their conditions. They don’t want us imposing our own on the stuff we allow in.
Which is exactly why they love Ceuta as an irritant for the EU.

⁃ EUV lithography: yes, but sell only to who Americans wants you to.

I am definitely not selling us short. The EU is one of the single political and economic entities that the US under MAGA has little leverage over. They don’t like that at all.
