I cannot use Firefox on my laptop anymore due to a nasty bug where at some point it will trigger click actions in a loop. I've had it open hundreds of tabs all of a sudden, or select/deselect checkboxes at a rapid pace, on different websites. I cannot really find any mention of this bug on search engines. Anyone has this?
What would the fediverse recommend for someone who wants to become a data scientist, has extensive experience analysing data, but doesn't have a proper data science diploma. Would recruiters see a PhD as a data science credential? Would specific certifications help?
I used to enjoy writing detailed feedback on written work, knowing that this feedback would help students write a better report. I hate doing the same when I know this feedback will only help a chatbot write a better report. I have signed up for this job wanting to educate humans, not robots. 😱

I am looking for real-life examples from newspapers, reports, etc. of companies that commited labor abuses or environmental violations (e.g. EPA/OSHA but also in other countries), but nothing happened to them because either they were the major local employer/there were few employment alternatives nearby, or there was no effective enforcement of penalties. A phenomenon I've noticed recently is people trying to occupy some untenable middleground wrt to the use of systems sold as "AI" -- this is a position where people try to recognize the harms of this tech but also hold space for "responsible" or "ethical" use.

users do things that make sense to them in the moment. failure to understand the context where an action -makes sense- and is thus the correct action to choose is a skill issue on your part.
Just got a copy of the union magazine, and they clearly mention a "learning crisis" that I also see in my own workplace: declining attendance, a flipped balance where students spend more time in "side jobs", and the impact of AI meaning that students really learn less … but somehow the magazine "buries the lede" by only making the title about "empty lecture halls". Course design often comes with unintended consequences. I teach the use of spreadsheets (yes, that one, because it's provided by school). Because I designed my course to first show pivot tables and then charts, many students now think that pivot tables are pre-requisites for charts.
My kids' school has laptops with ChromeOS on them, an OS with the unfortunate design choice that accounts can be removed from the login screen without the need for any privileges. You can guess one thing that bullies love to do.
Youtube offered me a Rutger Bregman video recently, about AI. I know the name of the guy and that he's supposed to be one of the good guys.
Within the first minutes it became clear that the guy was thoroughly AI-pilled, misrepresenting the stochastic parrots paper and slamming the authors. I closed the video.

In a time of tight budgets, one of our competitors is going completely [cannot find a word that is politically correct to describe this pipedream] and are recruiting... 10 SCRUM product owners at the same time related to every process in the school. I am not sure how they will find people who have both expertise of SCRUM and education, how they will prioritise, but also how they even thought that this would be a good idea
My employer uses a "similarity detection" tool (not a a "plagiarism detection" like some people like to call it), and by default it includes the reference list. Which means that students with a rigorously formatted reference list based on highly cited papers have a higher score! What a horrible tool that penalises good practices.
For the n-th time in 20 years now, I'm hearing some form of the argument that "we can't offer you a leadership role because you have no leadership experience". At least I've heard it in 3 different languages now. I don't know how to get any leadership experience.
How do I find a job that's neither going to burn me out nor bore me?
I have started looking at possible jobs and often have a gut feeling when reading them that they sound understimulating compared to my current position. Part of it may be that offers don't reflect the job itself correctly (I really hope that UX designers don't spend their whole days clicking on Figma). I guess the fediverse might have clues given how many people here have #adhd or #audhd ???
