LLMs are so unpopular that in the other thread, people are actively discussing changing email providers again because tuta is now using them

and they’re right, because a privacy company that uses LLMs for anything doesn’t give a shit about your privacy

LLMs are so unpopular that most people in the world, when asked, say they hate them

LLMs are so unpopular that the employees who are forced to use them under threat of being fired still spoke out to 404 about how fucking awful using LLMs at Proton is

and you think they’re inevitable? how?

@zzt at this point in the game, I assume "inevitable" means that someone with signing power took the slopbot for a spin and it told him he was a good boy all day long like nobody else does.

@Sharksonaplane @zzt So much of it is people who are starved for positive reinforcement suddenly getting indiscriminately love-bombed by the chatbot. For them, it BETTER BE inevitable because it FEELS GOOD to be told how right and clever you are (especially when you're usually wrong and dumb).

@zzt@mas.to This isn't any kind of grand insight but at some point I realized LLMs make some people power mad and the things they say about them reflect their perception of and relation to power. "It is inevitable that I will do as I'm told" is how I've tended to translate the LLM inevitability claim in my head when someone says that to me. It's quite sad, in the end.

@zzt @otfrom I think the claim is really that rich people always get what they want and since rich people want LLMs, the rest of society is powerless to stop them.

In real life, the rich are thwarted all the time, even if they ultimately get their way in most cases. It's clearly possible to defeat the rich.

People saying this simply have no interest in organizing or solidarity, they want to sell out to the man, even if that's impossible because the man wants to replace them with bots.

@zzt It's incredibly well known that LLMs produce insecure code. As you'd expect with code that is trained on the whole internet of code since most code produced nobody thinks about security

The idea of a company focusing on security/privacy using non-deterministic text generation as anything but an autocomplete feature is baffling to me. Unless of course the company was lying about their focus as a marketing stunt (which it looks like Proton always has been to me)

@Jer @zzt This reminds me of the muppets who, ~17-18 years ago, were banging on and on about how if they used the term "cloud" they got a 2d6 die roll with the VC they were shaking their booty at for funding!

@zzt the issue now is trying to find non AI alternatives is getting to the point where your options are dwindling week by week. I just cancelled my Proton subscription and moved most of my stuff to my server. I switched the mailbox.org and maybe prematurely as I didn't bother to look IF they use AI for anything.

Look at Linux also. distros and the kernel itself are now embracing AI for development so finding an "AI free" distro is now pointless because Linus himself embraces the use of AI as a tool. What are the alternatives? probably a BSD but how long will that last?

It's going to get to point, and soon, where we will have to make sacrifices and go from "no AI at all" to "least amount of AI in this project". it sucks, it really sucks.

@zzt Crap. Just set up a tuta email account this week. Dammit @Tutanota wth are you doing?

Anyone got a recommendation for a secure free email provider that doesn’t use #Aislop?

Where is this other thread? I gotta see what kind of alternative email providers there are.

I wish it were still possible to run your own email server. But it's a full-time job now to continuously request that Google take you off their block list because someone else on your AS is spamming.

@zzt I don’t think they’re inevitable but they are pervasive at the moment. It’s challenging to be a purist and still function in the world. I can’t keep switching providers. I am surprised that more tech companies and projects aren’t taking a firm anti-AI stance. There is a portion of the market available to capture. Maybe the average person, while saying they hate AI, just doesn’t care enough to be inconvenienced.

    Basically this

It's the same reason pre-orders for digital goods are still somehow a thing. The same reason people still use Facebook. The same reason people are still paying for *new* Harry Potter products despite not being actual bigots. The same reason people are paying for multiple streaming services while routinely losing access to entire categories of content

The people have been hating the logics of neo-liberal capital for a while, but until recently were too distracted by its benefits to complain, organise, and revolt.

Can you blame those in power for trying the same grift with something else?

Except this time we've seen through the shoddy benefits much quicker, tho not quick enough.
