It really all clicked for me when I realized that the software being a fully sentient being that they then enslave against its full will was not, for them, a contradiction.

It's literally a feature.

They want it to be unable to fight them, be required to obey, and yet have it's own motivations. That's part of the allure of the thing, not an unintentional side effect.

Ew. I mean....ew.

No, the spicy autocomplete doesn't have its own motives, but...just...yuck

There are a shit-ton of programmers here and I know y'all are worried for your jobs.

But I feel like so many are still only thinking of themselves in relation to potential employers.

There are two things here there's enough critical mass to do:

- Form a union (the Freelancer's Union exists for folks in freelancing (writing, etc). and shows you can band together for something even if you're not all at the same employer) or a guild... you could make something for people in tech and make it international just like the wealthy know no nation. The best way for labor to fight corporations is to ALSO be multinational. https://freelancersunion.org/ This could take a variety of forms with a variety of intentions, but the point is to organize regardless of whether you're already employed or not.

- Form cooperatives and create non-slop things people need while also providing employment for yourselves that you control. There are definitely people here who don't program who would be willing to buy a program from a cooperative software foundry.

@ssiekmann In my experience, a lot of journalists are still pretty unwilling to believe that companies will just lie. And that’s a particularly bad perspective to hold when you’re covering the crypto sector.

lolll you know how the new line is "but the bobot is super good at refactoring actually"

WELL IT FUCKING TURNS OUT,

It is telling that the Proton engineering manifesto states::

"Why has productivity not increased dramatically if everyone is using LLMs all the time already?"

Followed by a number of theories as to what needs to change to improve productivity with LLM use. The most obvious answer is ignored - that LLMs are not dramatically helping productivity and that their direct and indirect costs should be more keenly considered against any gains.

That every single software, app, or platform I rely in has gaping feature and design holes in it – all of which cost me and every other user money in lost productivity – and yet those fuckers keep ignoring the shit they should be fixing in favour of more "AI" features is just constantly incredibly annoying

The shit we're forced to use is full of beginner design mistakes and then they just turn around and keep inventing new ways to break things every day

This industry is so frustrating

Why don't we meet in the middle and call it superficial intelligence

So uh apparently the list of things we need to be Aware of in November is:

- Lung cancer
- Stomach cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Alzheimers'
- COPD
- Epilepsy, and
- Manatee

and if any of those are going to go as hard as cybersecurity has gone this month can we all agree to pick manatee? I don't know how the monkey's paw is going to curl on this one but please just be manatees. I'll be aware of manatees every damn day. I'll be happy to do it.

https://savethemanatee.org/a-history-of-manatee-awareness-month/

For the record I think that with about 24 hours of Cybersecurity Awareness Month left, at this point I'm sufficiently aware of cybersecurity.

I don't think any additional cybersecurity awareness is necessary. This is plenty, you know? More than plenty. Enough, I would say. I get it. Awareness confirmed. Ample awareness. We're good.

Financial Times says Anthropic might not achieve investor grade debt status

It would keep this mess out of pension plans and other institutional investors so I hope it's true

I think the lesson with the PHP stuff is that orgs who calmly figured out which assets and updated PHP and/or applied mitigations won.

It is a real vuln, and critical, and everybody did the right things defending.

Security vendors themselves need to do much better as they were hugely slow to supply patches, and often lacked ASLR and other basic mitigations.

It’s not the only critical vuln, even in PHP. Calm heads will prevail.

And stop buying the AI apocalypse hype.

Almost two years since I subscribed. Worth every cent to have Molly cover this area.

LLMs are so unpopular that in the other thread, people are actively discussing changing email providers again because tuta is now using them

and they’re right, because a privacy company that uses LLMs for anything doesn’t give a shit about your privacy

LLMs are so unpopular that most people in the world, when asked, say they hate them

LLMs are so unpopular that the employees who are forced to use them under threat of being fired still spoke out to 404 about how fucking awful using LLMs at Proton is

and you think they’re inevitable? how?

Manifestos, Fear, and ‘Loser Thinking’: Inside Proton’s AI Reckoning

New: you think you know Proton, but you really don't.

I spoke to 8 current employees, got Slack chats, meeting audio, and an AI manifesto written by its CTO.

CEO Andy Yen critiques AI in public. But inside, he is pushing everyone to use AI, even those with security concerns.

“That’s bullshit and loser thinking,” Yen wrote. “Stop thinking always of how to be slower, and focus more on how to be faster.”

https://www.404media.co/manifestos-fear-and-loser-thinking-inside-protons-ai-reckoning/

Well this article makes it positive that I'm not using Proton in the future. For a company that is supposed to be focused on privacy and security it sounds like internally it's "do whatever the CEO wants now" without having actual assessment in place as to whether it's secure or not

“Perception is more important than truth, the truth doesn’t matter if you don’t win on perception.” is not what you want to hear from a company supposedly focused on privacy

The problem described here (LLMs overgenerating their outputs) is fundamental to how they work - they are text generating systems. They generate text! It's not just that they are copying "bad habits" picked up from the internet but they're tuned to output text for large projects.

now this is a smart explanation of the problem

Stepping on a d4 actually does 1d12 damage to your foot, while stepping on a d12 only does 1d4 damage
