The main issue with my HP Zbook is, that Linux support of the built in firmware for keyboard, sound etc… is not really working well.

When logged into my USB hub with external devices it’s all good, but it can be an issue on the go.

I have started to concider if rather than getting a new control device or audio interface, I should prioritize a second hand laptop with similar specs but less firmware quirks.

This is not the fault of Linux, this is hardware vendors choosing not to support Linux.

I really hate it’s like this, because the HP Zbook is such a cheap and powerful unit, and in these crazy hardware-price-jump times, getting the most out of second hand hardware should be so important.

I could definitely see some kind of meaning in forcing vendors to offer openess about drivers and OS support. It makes no sense not to support the Linux or BSD eco-system and give people a choice of using a free OS.

I would like the law makers to look at that!

@mosgaard for me, it's the speakers. I cannot get them to work 100%. They have sleep mode drivers that cause the first second of audio to be lost before the rest plays.

I have tried more than most people. They are still broken as of Linux kernel 7.3, and this was sold with Linux by Tuxedo (not my model, but other laptops with this same Uniwill/Tongfang Chassis are sold with Windows 11). That's not a good sign a year later... :(

@cameron_bosch I have been fighting with that sleep mode drivers too.

It sucks that so much old hardware risks going to ewaste for things which could propably easily be solved if the vendors would open the driver proces.

@mosgaard I hope you will be just as lucky I have been when some Kernel-Upgrade years ago solved my problem with the Lenovo Yoga touchpad. I had the most annoying problem where the touchpad started to have micro-stutters some random time after boot, untill the next full reboot.

Back then I provided a bug report for the kernel tracker. I never thought that would make a difference. But it did.

@linos I should definitely look into giving feedback to the right place, good idea!

I’m don’t know of Zbook is too rare to get that kind of attention.
