    I'm hiring 👀🐙⚡

    This is a rare opportunity to join the Data Visualisation team at Octopus Energy, the largest (and most exciting) energy supplier in Britain.

    It's a tiny team with a big remit and an outsized impact. You'll be working directly alongside me to help shape how the public understands the energy transition.

    You'll turn complex energy data into clear, compelling stories; working closely with senior leadership, marketing, policy, press and product teams.

    You'll be exposed to a diverse range of energy-related topics in areas like supply, renewables, policy, infrastructure and low carbon technology… to name just a few.

    On the visualisation side we mostly live in React and Next.js, Mapbox and WebGL, with Blender for 3D and animation.

    But we reach for whatever the job needs, so you'll be picking up new things regularly.

    @robhawkes I'd love to discuss with you whether any of these opportunities could be developed as a Data Scientist or Data Analyst apprenticeship programme? 86% of everyone who's ever taken our apprenticeship got a 1st (the others all got 2:1s) and we have an achievement rate well in excess of the national average. It's a really strong programme for employers who want to shape their own talent pool.

    ... "and you can commute to London" :)

    @robhawkes

    oh! the first thing it says is "UK, London, hybrid".

    damn, I wish I was a data eng person. But I'll keep my eyes open for other positions. They used to be UK only, or they always had this contradicting details?

    @robhawkes @mdione I can 100% see that being an issue with the job platform - the one at my place is similarly... lacking. It's a shame though, because you might be losing potential applicants who just see the "London/Hybrid" and move on without looking further.

    Still, I wish you luck with finding a great candidate!

    TBH, that's what I do when I'm looking for new positions. Usually the goal is to send one CV per day, but the first step is to thresh all positions to find one to apply to.

    Honestly, I even prefer that posts like yours already mention those parameters because they're the first filter.

    @robhawkes

    note to self: must get off ar&e and build my own data system for my household energy data this summer, only been needing to do it for 2 years now. 🙄🤦‍♂️

    @robhawkes damn Robin, that sounds awesome. I wish I wish I wish I could apply but I don't have the display/chart/graphics chops for it. It sounds like a very exciting project, and I wish you all the very best.

    @robhawkes not related to your job posting but I wish you luck…

    That graphic is REALLY cool and shows exactly why people should be charging their EVs off peak or handing control to kraken systems to take care of it for them. First time seeing this and it’s so much more engaging than a graph (sorry).

    @robhawkes Nice, to see someone from Octopus here. Is Octopus in the Fediverse as well? (Especially the German branch)?

    @robhawkes Sounds like really good fun, particularly compared to a lot of the crap jobs that are out there at the moment. But I've decided I'm definitely retired.

    @robhawkes I think this sounds like a super interesting role! I mostly have experience with animation in an arts/culture context, but a lot of it has used code to drive visuals. I just wonder if there's a particular kind of experience you have in mind to work with or if you're open to candidates from other backgrounds outside of data vis?

    @robhawkes I have to ask: what's your take on LLMs in your team?

    I had a bad experience with LLM use by your customer support team, you see, so am a bit wary of Octopus as a company...
