yasss my 2013 nissan leaf AZE0 now has a 69kWh battery! the meter shows 450km+, but I just drove 70km on the highway and it only used 13% so that amounts to about 540km on the highway, absurd for a 13 year old electric car!

I also got a Chademo to CCS2 converter plug, so I'm now able to charge at absolutely any random fast charger, removed the TCU (Telematics), replaced steering joints, etc. This 13 year old car is ready to go for another decade!

a photo of the dashboard, showing it has driven 80578km in total, 2.3km trip, and now has 449km range available (100% battery charge)

@robparsons there's a garage in the Netherlands that does it, "De EV Garage", and they basically just open up the original battery and fill it with brand new higher density cells, and make the pack slightly bigger by installing standoffs and sealing the pack all around. It does make the car heavier (~150kg), so you need to reinforce the suspension.

All in all it's an expensive upgrade (10k for the pack alone), but if you compare that to other 70kwh new cars it's still a very good deal I'd say!

Nice. Will it stay at that capacity? IIRC the Leaf had problems with battery degradation due to lack of temperature control, so how was that fixed? Or was it an overblown issue to begin with?

@anonax This leaf still had 85% of its original 24kwh capacity when I got it! So I guess it very much depends on the kind of usage.

I presume the main issue is fast charging, especially in hot weather, due to the lack of active temperature management. With a 70kwh battery I don't really foresee needing it much at all, and if I do, the climate in the Netherlands is not terribly hot either.

It was a bit overblown. It could happen in very hot environments (it was an older chemistry), but even then it was mostly a problem if you drove it far and charged it up to 100% every time.

@feld it was quite expensive, at 13k including all the changes and labor, the other upgrades were much cheaper. But if I compare that to other vehicles with the same capacity it seems like a pretty good deal.

It's a completely aftermarket custom mod, so I guess you'd have to find a place that specifically does it. I got it done at "De EV Garage" in Emmen, the Netherlands.

@anthropy yeah when I was looking there was only one guy in the USA doing custom battery packs for the Leafs

in other news, I learned I can get a re-manned battery for my Model 3 straight from Tesla for only $8000 now

It's great that replacement batteries are becoming available at affordable prices. Way better than doing like an engine swap.

@anthropy That's awesome! When I got my 2013 Chevy volt, I was sure that by now there would be a thriving aftermarket battery upgrade market so I'd be able to swap a larger capacity battery into the same footprint. Just another thing I got wrong.

Super cool that's it's actually happening somewhere. 450km is more than many modern electric cars with a similar or larger battery capacity get!

@Ariantoser yea I heard they make it really tüv to do anything with your car, super boring and annoying, for that alone I prefer the netherlands :neonetherlands_woozy:

The car industry really have their say in the law 😅
I believe finland is also no fun to play with cars-country. Perhaps need to visit netherlands every time in need for some fun 🤣

    @anthropy

TÜV (Technischer Überwachungsverein) was founded to rise security in steam powered machines (!!).
If you change something on motorized vehicles which is relevant for driving or security (like electronic (gps) or battery, better brakes, etc.) you have to let them inspect. The original model of manufacturer has an EC type-approval.

If TÜV (or other engineers, TÜV is only one of a handfull accredited /allowed organisations) does not agree, they will decide you must not use the vehicle in public.

On the one hand, many things are good! On the other hand, what the fuck has a greater capacity battery to do with driving security? 😅

@anthropy I still see loads of old Leafs driving around the Portland area. Wouldn't be a good fit if you're in an extreme climate, but they can be had for cheap and they're repairable. Can't say the same about too many cars today

Sounds quite a task!! Do you have a blog of all the changes you made, or was there some EV specialist workshop.
It’s great to have option for mods. I’m afraid to get any new car due to enshittification happening all over…

@make I used De EV Garage in the Netherlands, but I do understand what they did, they basically just replaced the cells in the pack with new high density ones, making the pack slightly bigger to fit more cells. they also upgraded the suspension to hold the extra weight (mostly extra springs)
