    Firstly, I feel it's important to explain for people who haven't previously followed British politics but have been intrigued by the Binface story: last night's result wasn't actually a disappointment. Last night's result was a huge success.

    Much as it might've been fun to fantasise, Count Binface was never actually going to win. He is, after all, a man with a bin on his head. But for him to get almost ten thousand votes - more than a quarter of the vote! - is spectacular. It massively exceeds any previous result for such a candidate.

    And make no mistake, that is absolutely humiliating for Farage. Local polling had him winning with 73%, and that alone would have been deeply embarrassing. To only get 63% when no other serious party stood is much worse than was predicted anywhere.

    On top of this, the investigation into his dodgy finances will restart when the parliamentary recess ends. But it will now have the added consideration of Farage having disrespected the Standards Committee, and there's precedent for that being treated as a serious offence. So it's highly likely there'll be a proper recall election in Clacton a few months from now.

    Finally, this ridiculous debacle has ensured that his dodgy finances have received much greater national publicity than was previously the case, in a particularly superb example of the Streisand Effect.

    All in all, it's gone very well.

    @RolloTreadway been following this a little bit and heard an interview with count binface on the rest is politics. As he mentioned whether Farage wins or loses, he already lost. Winning against a bin is not very impressive! Of course it would have been sweeter if he lost, but the count didn't have a serious campaign going.

    @AutisticDoctorStruggles @RolloTreadway Which was sad. He could have mobilised the by-election groupies of all the major parties who would have had nothing else to do that month and could have delivered vast numbers of leaflets for him. I'd have gone. It's quite fun working in a by-election HQ on the same side as members of other parties whom you're usually fighting against.

    @RolloTreadway and NF's comments about other candidates are a matter of record now. I found those particularly disgusting. does not respect for democracy mean respect for all candidates even if you don't like their views? I think this isn't the last problem for REform UK, and long may their problems continue. and I don't say that just because I'm opposed to their politics. the rules are there, when you are thinking of becoming an mp, you need to look at rules.

    @GeofCox @RolloTreadway agree with most of the points here and I am 💯 NOT a fan of Frograge but he did get more actual votes than he got in the GE so not sure it's as humiliating as everyone says it is.

    @LiquorVicar @GeofCox @RolloTreadway I often say that just repeating a statement often enough doesn't make it true. In this particular case, if enough people repeat it, it might actually become true 😬 this being a court of puplic opinion and all.

    @rgarner @GeofCox @RolloTreadway I'm definitely not disheartened. It was a disaster for him/Reform in nearly every other way! It could be very interesting if the investigation finds against him and a recall petition is started (and succeeds). Though neither of those 3 steps are guaranteed.

    @LiquorVicar @GeofCox @RolloTreadway He got about a thousand more - but with none of the other big parties standing there were thousands of votes going begging. 12,000+ from the Tories alone. And he didn't manage to take a significant number of them. Those votes mostly went to Binface or the voters stayed home.

    @LiquorVicar @GeofCox @RolloTreadway number of people eligible to vote has gone up, and the general election had actual political parties involved. the small increase is not a win (I've also heard that some people have been interviewed and said they voted for him so that the parliamentary investigation would continue)

    @GeofCox @RolloTreadway Huh, I missed the actually turnout. I read articles where they interviewed residents and it seemed like many people were choosing to stay home, so I expected low turnout, but 44% is sad.

    Farage was so humiliated that he couldn't appear with Count Binface and the other candidates when the results were announced. Instead he scuttled away citing fake security concerns. That's the last time Clacton will see him until the next by-election.

    @RolloTreadway I still won’t hear a word defending the people of Clacton though. They had a choice and they chose hatred and racism. I’ve seen some sad-face articles written by residents saying “oh we’ve been turned into a media circus” and “please don’t characterise us as racist and stupid” yet they’ve just elected the fash. Again. Despite a massive investigation into funding. Despite his awful track record as an MP so far.

    They weren't presented with a viable alternative - at least they voted. If you want people to eat healthy, gotta have it on the menu. What they had was a choice between bad and a throwaway protest vote.

    @tbortels @RolloTreadway @ret@furry.engineer In which case 'throwaway protest vote' is the obvious correct answer! Vote for _anyone_ ahead of the fascist; is this not straightforward? Especially when there's an obvious competitor to absorb all "not f'in you" votes!
    Side note: you regard voting for Nigel Farage as _less_ morally suspect than staying home?

    @jimmynohands @RolloTreadway

    I do. Voting is a civic duty. To *not* vote is quite literally to say "I don't care how my government is run". Participation is minimum table stakes. At least the Farage voters had a voice and went to have their vote counted, which was their right and obligation. You could just as easily say Farage won because the non-Farage voters were apathetic. Very sad. Those who didn't vote *let him win*.

    I'm a big Count Binface fan, but if he took as much of the vote as he did - Imagine what a real alternative could have done. I get why they didn't - the election was a farce - but still.

    Seems a bit lumpy-togethery to me. If I were one of the 9000-odd people who voted for Binface, I would be quite put out to be told I "chose hatred and racism" based on living where I live.

    @RolloTreadway if you add the Farage & Binface results together, that's 90% of the vote

    turnout was down 14%, some of the other candidates must have been down to single figures of votes cast.

    @bugbear @M0KHR looks like 4 candidates aside from Farage have addresses in Clacton, and they finished 5th, 8th, 10th and 13th and all over 100 votes so definitely some benefit of being local

    ugh Laurence Fox was probably the protest vote for the people who agree with Reform but don't like Farage

    @wolfie @M0KHR Oh, I stand corrected then. I apologise, I didn't check their addresses.

    You're probably right. :ac_sadness: If only Reclaim could at least split their votes in elections so neither get elected. It keeps worrying me how many votes Reform (or Reclaim) gets in elections these days...

    There are also a couple of other existing parties which stood, one with 3 candidates, and these results aren't good for any of them. Your aim might be satire, but you need to look as though you're shooting with your eyes open.

    @RolloTreadway Honestly, I still think they should have elected Count Binface. He would probably resign anyway and they would end up with another election either way. (Well, depending on the findings of the investigation, of course)

    Yes, the result of this election is hugely embarrassing for him, but by not electing him at all, they would have shown they won't stand for this kind of thing.

     You know what's really disheartening? He'll likely win a recall election. I absolutely loath blaming the electorate...but fuck me sideways it's hard not to point the finger at them right now and wonder wtf is going on; the man doesn't even respect them enough to turn up to the count.

    He hates them, he hates their town, he hates being there...and yet they'll still vote for him because he's what, a man of the people? Do me a favour.

    @RolloTreadway

    The fact that Farage refused to attend the count was huge. That meant he was actually worried that, even with the odds stacked in his favour, that he *might* not win was in his mind. He genuinely did not want to be there, because he was a scared little pantspissing weasel and not a man.
