❤️ Richard Scarry
We own one of the Busytown books (*Tatü — tatü, die Feuerwehr!*). The art style has aged in a way that makes it very trippy to look at in 2026. The German translation is also pretty hilarious. It might simply be a bad job, but it comes across as very deadpan.
SeiðrIlluminatus@mstdn.socialAug 12, 2026, 8:20 AM@fregonar I had Richard Scarry's books when I was a child and I blame him for my expectations on whimsical cars, but also I was tremendously surprised when I discovered he was USAmerican and not a Brit.

Aug 12, 2026, 12:38 PMScarry was old enough to remember what USA looked like before cities were demolished for car-dependency post-WW2. He also move to Switzerland when he was 50, around 1972.
Not to mention that his son who now continues the series is for all practical purposes a Swiss.

Jaime RobertsonJamesPadraicR@mastodon.socialAug 14, 2026, 4:38 AM@futurebird @fregonar I had a Westie named Haggis, and I grew up on Richard Scarry books. I don’t think there’s a connection, I didn’t remember the Scarry character. Haggie was a sturdy pup, and shaped like a haggis.
- myrmepropagandistfuturebird@sauropods.winAug 12, 2026, 11:45 AM
This is very insensitive to Scottish people
- SOScotlandSOScotland@mastodon.scotAug 12, 2026, 5:00 PM
@futurebird @fregonar In what way? Did I miss a memo?
- myrmepropagandistfuturebird@sauropods.winAug 12, 2026, 5:06 PM
I'm just being silly. The way he's dressed, that he's a Scotty dog named Haggis. It's just a bunch of goofy simple stereotypes.
I'm not Scottish though so no idea how this would hit. It just seemed kind of goofy to me.
- SOScotlandSOScotland@mastodon.scotAug 13, 2026, 7:26 AM
@fregonar @futurebird In a world where worms drive cars shaped like apples, it might be one of the lesser goofy things. As a Scot who grew up with Scarry books, I’m happy to be represented in that world.
Aug 12, 2026, 2:36 PM@fregonar Every time I see this I'm reminded "fixing" the roof is not the right choice, because it's a hit on your quality of life for 50% of the panes.
Aug 12, 2026, 3:29 PM@pozorvlak Also the Supreme Court's 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder: Since the passage of the Voting Rights Act fifty years before, places like Shelby Country, Alabama had been unable to discriminate against African-Americans in voting practices; therefore the VRA no longer needed to be enforced since there hadn't been any discrimination for a long time.
Ginsburg characterized it as “I'm not getting wet, therefore I no longer need this umbrella”.

Also makes for a very nice explainer about constitutions and democratic/human rights. You barely need them when your government is nice to you. When they start going all fascist, you'll be glad you didn't neglect them ... that is: you'll wish you had not thrown away privacy laws for the benefit of Google and "security", and had not given law enforcement all those permissions that happen to come in really handy for fascists, too.

Just to provide a full reference with link, this is from page 55 of the book "Storybook Dictionary" by Richard Scarry published in 1972, viewable on the @internetarchive:https://archive.org/details/1scarryRichardStorybookDictionary/page/54/mode/2up
