Oftentimes when writing #rust code I find myself so twisted into a knot trying to get past the borrow checker that I think the best thing is to git reset --hard and try again with a simpler design.

The Cubic Corp DVM used to work, but now doesn't -- I think it's the steppers having dirty contacts. It uses telephone-type stepper switches (that's helpful to know, isn't it) with over 9000 contacts. Comes with a manual from an approximately similar model; I've used it to repair.

The stacked lucite sheet edge display is absolutely fabulous; I will dismantle the machine to extract it if no one wants it. FREE TO A GOOD (or even abusive) HOME.

Being an automated wheatstone bridge it remains accurate to 0.01%. It's probablyt more accurate than my Fluke 115. This is first-generation automatic digital VM, made with 0.01% wirewound resistors. It makes a glorious noise as the steppers attempt to balance the bridge, the algorithm is odd and quite loud, as the sound deadening foam left this earth 20 years ago.

These are boatanchors; 25 lbs or so. The HP is stuffed full of tools. The DVM is transistorized!

I forgot that https://octodon.social shutdown. @cwebber moved from there to social.coop in 2024. which means that all the amazing threads about the history of the fediverse / what is activitypub etc from 2017 to 2024 lead by or substantially containing Christine are now either gone or broken or only exist in weird archival forms on centralized web archives. I know that everything is temporary but this fact makes me sad.

The point made in some posts I boosted recently about Moore's law ending its run in the vicinity of 2010 feels right. Extrapolating the law you'd have 10s of terabytes of RAM in a laptop today, instead, because of the AI push and the lack of scaling in production, it's still 16GB or maybe 32. If Moore's law had continued to today, all the cutting edge AI models we have today would run just fine on your mobile phone much less your laptop or desktop. Instead, you need a $250k machine
