There is a segment of the US public who thinks that the left and democrats (who are groups that overlap but not even the same people) really are like this. Just pure villains who want bad things for everyone. Thinking about this for more than a second makes it not make sense. And as long as you see those with different policy ideas as evil you don't need to discuss the policy.
You don't need to talk about "Well will this war do what you claim?"
Yes, I'm soft on crime. Because I love crime. Can't get enough of those crimes. Just love to be mugged or find out my poor mother had her purse snatched. It's delightful.
This was an excellent moment in this hearing. This guy can't say "Trump lost the election in 2020" can't even bring himself utter those words.
When these questions start you aren't really having a conversation anymore.
Do you want Iran to have nuclear weapons?
Do you want to let fentanyl enter the country?
Do you want men in women's locker rooms?

But, I think it's impossible to explain why a Golden Dome for missiles (that might not even work) is a better project than my idea of tornado shelters.
If you would protect "the people" from theoretical missiles from theoretical enemies then why not from real missiles from *real* tornados?

In 2011 553 people died in tornados. This was the most deadly year since 1950. In 2024 only 53 people died... which is a more typical number.
The point is that every single year people die from tornados. Every year.
Maybe I was too politically cut-throat and cynical in my view of the Supreme Court. But, it seems transparent to me that this is a very powerful set of people and pretending they aren't partisan is silly.
If the right people had pressured RBG she might have come around. You can bet that is happening with Thomas and Alito now!

Sometimes I feel angry at Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A more centrist justice appointed by a democrat. Towards the end of Obama's last term everyone thought Hillary Clinton would win in 2016. Those who suggested she should resign to ensure her replacement would not be a Republican were called "ghoulish," and "too political" ... Next year? Trump replaced her with Brett M. Kavanaugh.
Now Alito and Tomas are under similar pressure from the right.

I agree. And it will never even be built. The only upside may be that they will need to hire some scientists to work to build it. Everything else about it is terrible.
So... why not tornado shelters? Tornados have attacked the US. They have killed Americans. We need to be protected from tornados.
We could detect every single one and get people into shelters much more effectively and it would really save lives from random death from the sky. Real lives, not imaginary stuff.

Background:
The "Golden Dome" is a Trump- proposed missile defense system for the entire US. The name mirrors the "Iron Dome" which is what Israel calls their missile defense system.
Never mind that gold is much softer than Iron and would not make a good dome. So the symbolism is off.
Such a system would cost multiple trillions of dollars. Many think it's not even possible to build such a system.

We could build tornado shelters for all of tornado ally (both of them) and state of the art sirens.

Why not tornado shelters? Every trailer park should have them. Most don't.
Instead when a tornado hits a park people just die and the newsman says "since these weren't well-built homes there was no place to take shelter"
