Oct 17, 2026, 8:19 PMI feel like the folks I see in my timeline, asking about wayland support; and wondering if they can bring their steam games... need to adjust their expectations as they plunge into alternate operating system land.

One of my long-standing criticisms about Wayland is how Linux-centric it is. It uses system calls specific to Linux and as such it's a pain to port to other OSs.- Oct 17, 2026, 8:41 PM
@ND3JR A lot of high level development in linux; has been kind of in-spite of portability, for a while now.
Lots of projects with dependencies on systemd, for example. (As I know you are aware.)
That loss of a desire for portability in the community has come around to bite us in this moment.
It's awfully hard to pair a desktop environment that has rejected slop, with a kernel that has rejected slop this second.
Oct 17, 2026, 9:52 PM@ND3JR @trashheap It's also not true? The core Wayland libraries have long since been ported to other POSIX OSes, and there's even a port to Windows being worked on. What the compositors do is separate from what the Wayland code does.
Oct 17, 2026, 10:33 PM@neal @ND3JR @trashheap Let us not define a standard for getting keyboard scan codes and then blame the compositors when every single one of them does "#include <linux/input.h>". Including the reference compositor.

@netbsd @ND3JR @trashheap There was an attempt to fix this in 2023 in Weston, but it seems to have stalled out after some progress... https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/weston/-/merge_requests/1195

Cassandrichdalias@hachyderm.ioOct 17, 2026, 9:55 PM@ND3JR @trashheap One thing folks who seek to leave Linux for the BSDs are going to have to discover and respect is that the latest-and-greatest stuff they were told to want on Linux, like Wayland, is part of the Linux monoculture project that's hostile to the BSDs and to open standards. It's not stuff we should want to bring along.
