Guys, if you’re in #emergencymedicine please do not even put anxiety on your differential until you have done a very thorough medical workup AND the patient has reported feeling anxious. It is a diagnosis of exclusion. “Anxiety” is the diagnosis on the chart the day before the patient dies from their blood clot, arrhythmia, thyroid storm, sepsis, hemorrhagic shock, or overdose. It is a bullshit diagnosis unless you have a clear patient-reported history of anxiety.

I’m serious about this too, by the way

Linux as a project and as an ecosystem asked for our labor under false pretenses

why hasn’t its organizing foundation been flooded with itemized invoices for that labor?

and if you do this, include the hours you burned doing advocacy, too. that shit ain’t free.

“huh huh huh if you’re so unhappy with how linus is leading the kernel, you can always ask for a refund”

bet. where do we send the invoices for all the labor we donated to the Linux ecosystem under a promise that’s now repeatedly been broken? the Foundation can cover it at standard consultants’ rates for commercial work. I haven’t done the accounting, but I imagine they should be able to cover at least a few million dollars worth before they have to start dipping into torvalds’ paycheck

@jspath55 @nina_kali_nina @davidgerard And that is a problem because?

To me it is a bit like "we now have more than enough money to fix the roof so we are going to get someone in to decorate our living room".

It is also a very positive way for the NetBSD project to reinforce their stance on AI contributions.

It also makes human artists know that they and their skills are still appreciated.

Just like some folk appreciate developers still writing code in the "manual" way.

@nina_kali_nina @davidgerard I've always thought the real problem is that host bus interfaces are excessively balkanised. Once you get a good standard interface like, say, AHCI, you need fewer bespoke drivers and new devices become naturally compatible. The PC world has always suffered from this over-reliance on drivers, but we've got used to it being less of a problem because of the enormous development effort put into Linux.

@davidgerard I used to be mad/fuming about that too, until I realised the whole GPU support in NetBSD is basically done by a single unpaid volunteer. And same can be said about their WiFi stack, or their hardware virtualization. And then their entire budget for everything last year was less than 10% of what Meta or Google would spend on a single engineer supporting Linux - and megacorps have hundreds of engineers contributing to Linux.

Then it became clear to me that this is a miracle and incredible and this project and these people need more support and appreciation.

It will never stop being ironic to me that the one place I am certain never to stumble on LLM slop is piracy websites. I use piracy websites like the best catalog ever and then I go check out media from my local library. I am sure people have tried to upload LLM slop to piracy websites, but the pirates aren't sharing it, buddy. #Piracy

Cough update!

Several people mentioned environmental factors and allergies and a couple mentioned aerosols and essential oils which reminded me that I bought one of those plug-in air fresheners from Bath and Body Works right around when this cough started.

I unplugged it on Friday and my cough is essentially gone!

Thanks to all who took the time to offer suggestions. Sometimes crowdsourcing really does work!

Any car can fly if you pack it full of billionaires and drive it off a cliff

New local kernel exploit for #OpenBSD called #bigfish gets attackers root with KARL/SMAP/SMEP enabled, with building blocks in the chain going back ~37 years to the original BSD sources:

It also has really cool ANSI art. 😉

Single use software seems like a great follow up to single use plastics. I can’t wait for the next even more wasteful invention.

@jwz A while ago, a guy from Anthropic quit over fears that he was working on something that would kill all humans, and it made headlines that the other Anthropic guys also thought that. One of them even said that he believed that the chance of AI eradicating human life within the decade was "about 10%".

So my 70-year-old mum came over for a visit, and she had some very concerned questions to her computer scientist son. They were:

1. "Where do they get those percentages from? Do they just make them up, or do you think they have their chatbot make them up?"
2. "How can the lead researcher for Anthropic be someone who looks like his biggest worry should be whether his parents have packed his school lunch?"
3. "Are the staff at Anthropic swindlers, or are they actually mentally ill?"

@jwz She then thought it over, and remarked that if she was "CEO of an AI cult" (her choice of words), she'd look for employees who looked like they weren't doing well and seemed to have a foot out of the door already. Then she'd discreetly offer them 20 million dollars in cash to leave with a public story about how the tech is so awesome it's soon going to become a science fiction machine overlord.

and I am serious about this: if you want to predict what torvalds will say and do next, look at what AI boosters in power did months ago. he’s following the playbook to a T, and he’s digging up all the old justifications.

that makes it rather easy to shout back, of course, but torvalds isn’t (currently) afraid of that. he believes himself to be immune to shame.

torvalds is really speedrunning all the major “dickhead manager discovers the slopbot” points

and of course, observers know what comes next: trying to shout over every breakage, every maintainer that leaves, every instance where using LLMs has proven to be a horrible fucking idea

nobody operating in good faith thinks an LLM is like a compiler. this is an AI booster meme from early 2026. but torvalds has a captive audience, so his bad takes don’t need to be new. expect to see this crap parroted once again by the worst guys you know. https://mastodon.social/@nixCraft/117451805824031590

I have unsubscribed from the linux kernel mailing list.

I subscribed in 1998.

They don't need me, they have chatbots...

Hey, heads up to any users of Libby the library service. You need to check your settings to opt out of ai slop books and narrators

I'm a queer trans woman with rather fringe politics, and these dickheads are suggesting I should filter my expression through a statistically bland language system. I put a lot of effort into what I write, and trying to express myself. It's not fast, I often struggle with language for various reasons, but I'm happy to take the time thinking and rewriting things

Suggesting I run this through an LLM is suggesting that my ideas need to be made more bland. Do LLMs seem like they're useful for trying to explain the patriarchal aspects of applying binary sex to individuals? Or making "as the actress said to the bishop" jokes that only work if the actress has a dick? Or working the word cunt into every toot?

I want to express myself, not say something that is considered plausible based on everything else written

I actually think the suggestion is rather ableist; people saying our expression is less valuable than conforming to ideas of proper language and helping a capitalist, fascist enterprise. And fuck that. If you want to rot your brain with LLMs have fun, but don't suggest i do it, or suggest this is an appropriate way we try to include disabled people in society

@freecad @dalias no comments is having opinions and you know it. You are silently calling boosters to the rescue.

We're going to be posting longer form videos soon but for now here's some teasers of X11 apps running WITH touch support.

If you watch closely the xeyes aren't getting the touch events as clicks or something... some event mappings are off 🙃
