    Guys, if you’re in #emergencymedicine please do not even put anxiety on your differential until you have done a very thorough medical workup AND the patient has reported feeling anxious. It is a diagnosis of exclusion. “Anxiety” is the diagnosis on the chart the day before the patient dies from their blood clot, arrhythmia, thyroid storm, sepsis, hemorrhagic shock, or overdose. It is a bullshit diagnosis unless you have a clear patient-reported history of anxiety.

    @mcnado

    I have a friend whose doctors dismissed her breathing problems as anxiety until she finally saw a pulmonologist who told her that every single one of their lung patients has "anxiety" because guess what makes a person really anxious HAVING TROUBLE BREATHING.

    @stevegis_ssg @mcnado 1000% this. I had to work through a bunch of bothersome anxiety and hypertension checks earlier this year before I could finally talk to someone about a big change in my breathing. Literally thought I was dying and YES I was anxious about it, and NO that was not the cause.

    @mcnado I have complicated feelings on this because I did send myself to urgent care multiple times and the ER once, during panic attacks with no underlying cause, before I got on an SSRI for anxiety

    but the point that they still need to do the workup before concluding that is absolutely true
