Sep 22, 2026, 8:29 PMthe electron runtime is several hundred megabytes. the entirety of macintosh system 7.5.5 is about 75MB, and mini vmac is 164KB. if you want to ship a cross-platform native experience, you've got options

tapafontapafon@isn.tapaf.onlSep 22, 2026, 8:33 PM@joe Godot weights around the same (export binaries for one platform), and allows to package software as standalone app. Not to mention ability to ship app to stores (on mobile it's practically THE only option).
If that is too heavy, you can build custom export templates and strip unused features.

I miss living in a livable world.
Ted Mielczarektedmielczarek@mastodon.socialSep 23, 2026, 3:10 AM@joe honestly this gives you a much better security posture than embedding electron.
Andrew Bartlettabartlet@mastodon.nzoss.nzSep 23, 2026, 3:12 AM@joe It feels mildly ironic that the promised write once run anywhere of Java was fulfilled by JavaScript.
Sep 23, 2026, 3:37 AM@joe honestly 75 MB feels quite large for 7.5.5, you could likely get away with a lot less.

@d6 yeah i just looked up the size of the entire installer ISO as a high water mark. i imagine a real install doesn't need most of that. though iirc system 7 was so "bloated" for its time that you couldn't boot it off a floppy anymore

@joe 😅
neatcheeneatchee@urusai.socialSep 23, 2026, 3:54 AM@joe shipping a Mac emulator to run your software may be less footprint than shipping an electron app
an actual busrenardboy@mastodon.socialSep 23, 2026, 4:38 AM@joe they hated jesus because he told them the truth
Sep 23, 2026, 6:05 AM@joe The most scary part is that running Word 5 inside an emulator inside a web browser is faster that many web-editors…
Sep 23, 2026, 5:16 PM@joe @wordshaper I despise electron. It makes DJT look slim and agile.
Nick Lockwoodnicklockwood@mastodon.socialSep 24, 2026, 7:59 AM@MikeStok @joe @wordshaper otoh electron runs everywhere and DJT couldn't run anywhere if his life depended on it
