Headache Day 3: Season of the Witch

hell yeah i got #netbsd to boot on coreboot using libgfxinit in framebuffer mode!!! ( usually it only works when its compiled for vga-textmode only )

now i just need to figure out the root cause of why it default to boot with a vesa mode that does not exist

i have found a workaround for anyone wondering: https://angelwood.xyz/wiki/netbsd/

Fonts from the SD card are working in my test roms now. #uxn #xteink

I've also made good progress on the reader rom for the x4 pro. I'll start on the vm port later this week or sometime next, after I wrap up the current projects.

goth rock from my hometown

"Konilo is a small, pragmatic personal computing system written in Forth and running on a tiny virtual computer.

A complete system consists of an ilo vm, an image file ("rom") with the Konilo system, and a set of blocks for storage of code and data.

ilo provides a portable MISC computer with 64k 32-bit cells of memory, dual stacks, 30 instructions, and a small set of I/O devices. Konilo runs on ilo and brings a complete text-centric computing system with a Forth-based interactive compiler, block storage, editors, tools, and documentation.

ilo is highly portable, with implementations written in many languages and binaries are provided for a variety of common host systems. All run the same Konilo system. Hosts have spanned eveything from 16-bit x86 and classic 68k Macintosh to modern 64-bit systems and WebAssembly. It's been used on hardware with as little as 384k of RAM."

OKAY! Fucking finally. It was like pulling teeth to figure out where the EFI stuff for NetBSD even was. I knew if I could find that, I could copy it where it needed to go for rEFInd to detect it.

Well it was in `/usr/mdec/`, so if you're trying to multi-boot #NetBSD, hot tip to look in there for the stuff that needs copying into your EFI partition. Good grief.

Some details on the TV backlight repair, in case you run into something similar. https://tpolecat.github.io/www/blog/tv/

Anyone with open commissions who wants to do some #art for NetBSD?

We've got a budget for paying for some concept art and can later talk about working with you on some merch. DM us!

Naturally, we cannot accept contributions using generative AI.

I'm running a lightly modified version of the uxn4 vm & reader firmware from @neauoire on my x4 now.

We got around 120 donations in September, it's a lot to sort through. Thanks everyone!

My personal vow not to argue with anyone on the internet is really being tested these days.

weekend pomera updates:
- i made a script that cobbles together an "immutable" NetBSD root filesystem out of the install sets with my local /etc changes, mounting /tmp and /var on tmpfs to avoid eMMC wear. thanks to NetBSD's cross-build support, i can assemble the system mostly offline, except for pkgsrc packages. would be nice to have a guix-like for other Unixes
- got multiple VTs working with the display
- started wiring up sensors like battery and USB power
- made the power button work
