and I am serious about this: if you want to predict what torvalds will say and do next, look at what AI boosters in power did months ago. he’s following the playbook to a T, and he’s digging up all the old justifications.

that makes it rather easy to shout back, of course, but torvalds isn’t (currently) afraid of that. he believes himself to be immune to shame.

and hey, you know what? the linux kernel boy wants to pretend he can’t see a single difference between an LLM and a compiler or an editor?

    sure thing, kernel boy

the fuck was that CS degree again for? did you have your little brother write your code and take credit for it or something?

mail back your degree, fucker, we’ve proven beyond doubt you never completed your compilers requirement. we’ll fix the mistake your registrar made when they granted it.

hey given that you like stochastic bullshit so much, how about this

all of linus torvalds’ success writing kernel code happened by chance. he is a fraud.

that’s exactly the same as using an LLM. prove me wrong, little fucker.

you won’t, you don’t have any brain left in your fucking head. we know what happens to mid little fucks who embrace the slop machines. people who actually completed their degrees researched it!

it is currently day 0 of linus torvalds being unable to prove he isn’t a fraud who stumbled into or plagiarized all the code he wrote

why would I respond to repeated and personal betrayals by one of the most toxic men in tech with anger?

and yes, when our labor is stolen that’s a personal betrayal. it doesn’t matter if torvalds knows who I am. I frankly don’t give a shit if he does. what I need you to know is he’s a weak fuck pretending to be a genius.

@zzt man things would be a lot different if stallman ripped off the BSD kernel instead of trying to cook up one from scratch based on someone else's thesis

@zzt But yes, the entire reason Linux became big was because the GNU Mach kernel project was in development hell, and then Linus posted a hobby project as part of a rebuttal to a debate with one of his professors that was Good Enough to make the GNU coreutils standalone. Hell, remember the original posting Linus made? He never wanted it to become big! But it did anyway and now we're all paying the price

"when our labor is stolen that’s a personal betrayal"
I don't understand how more people don't see this. They're strip-mining the internet and selling it back to you via taps that they control. It's crazy to me that people are so quick to willingly surrender to what is clearly a new form of mass oppression that's taking root.

I'm already dealing with fresh college grads who can't arrive at solutions without prompting, it's extremely alarming every time I run into these people in classes.

Also, as an aside, the people who are okay with slopping code but don't like it when art is slopped are a whole other enigma to me. Like, do you just not value your work? Is that it?

    Altman did say:

"We see a future where intelligence is a utility like electricity or water and people buy it from us on a meter and use it for whatever they want to use it for," he added"

    Source: archive.ph/Rh1tM

It's why they've had books destroyed after scanning them for AI, with the intention of forcing us to depend on AI's regurgitated output when they originals can no longer be found.

This is by design and goes beyond just AI vomit infecting open source. 🤬

@synnfynn @axel @zzt OK now that's getting a bit too paranoid. They aren't destroying the books to prevent us getting them. Most of them are too rare to have many copies out there. They're just grabbing anything

    >> Like, do you just not value your work? Is that it?

I work with many people in the corporate structure and "not putting a value in their work" is exactly one of the reasons why they are fine with all this AI-bullshit.
They are just exchanging their time for money. Nothing more. No value creation happening.

And for some people the only time they started to create "value" is when they used LLM to make a lot of work that looks "professional". And this hooks them very bad.

@tael @zzt This is the message Torvalds sent that I read the other day that pissed me off so badly that, even though I was already struggling with insomnia, *made it worse*.

(it did get me to stop looking at my damn phone).  It's just such an angry, self-righteous, and absolutely fucking *wrong* take we've seen so many times.  And he's being such a huge fucking baby about it (just like, as stated, every other booster).  And it's coming in response to one kernel developer just trying to put up *some* reasonable expectations and trying to push back against the idea that they don't need to train new people in kernel development.

@tael @zzt "It's just a tool, like a compiler" no it isn't "just like autocomplete" no it isn't "just like blah blah blah" no it isn't!  It is, hilariously enough, something new and unique that is somewhat unlike anything that has come before!  That does not mean it is *good* or that it does what you are claiming it does.  It is very good at: attacking labor, providing justifications for shitty behavior, enclosure, propaganda, and misinformation.  It's pretty much shown to be "not that useful" for everything else when any reasonable metrics are applied to it.

He's definitely 6 months to a year behind on his propaganda and that is really frustrating since he effectively gatekeeps the kernel, which is wildly goddamn important.
