also tagging @zzt because this isn't part of that thread

Holy hell it's been a long time since Education Yourself! This installment is "Lucky Linus and the Development Hell" where some kid's hobby project ends up powering The Thing The Entire Digital World Has Been Built Upon For Literal Decades

alright, dropped it to 640x480, aaaand... this is as far as it gets

so I installed my RTX 2060, aaaand... uhhhhh... I don't think NetBSD is happy. Not sure what is missing? Can't seem to get a readable console either. Maybe I should use a really tiny resolution on boot and use that to get to the boot.cfg? But then what next...?

Serious and important question to all #Linux users, in particular #Fedora users (in particular #Fedora44 if this makes any difference)

It looks like I will be needing to swap back to using an Nvidia graphics card (RTX 2060). Is it still a miserable experience with drivers? And if so, how do I make it not so miserable that I get PTSD?

:blobfoxthinking: well... looks like if I want to improve video hardware support on NetBSD, I have to set the entire thing on fire, reinstall completely fresh WITHOUT installing X, then manually install the "modular" X.Org packages so I can get the "xf86-video-intel" package to install and work, and thus allegedly leverage the existing DRM stuff

:blobfoxgooglyholdingitsheadinitshands: what the absolute fuck is this timeline

:blobfoxdisapprove: "Fork the Linux kernel"
:blobfoxthumbsup: "Port the drivers from Linux to NetBSD"

#NetBSD, take 2...
So with that "new" WiFi adapter, I now have solid internet without tethering in NetBSD. Hooray!
But now I got a new issue. I've got my big 27TB disk turned into a ZFS setup, and I tar'd a copy of my home directory into it, so that I could unpack it into my NetBSD home directory and get all my dotfiles and whatnot. (Said "whatnot" also includes the CDE and Motif source code so that I can build them and use them!)
I just... don't have a goddamn clue as to how to make the zfs command *SEE* that wd1 has a valid ZFS pool and thus let me mount it. (there's also mounting wd0 as NTFS, but we can deal with that later?) I tried looking up information, but all I got was a copy of the man page for zfs and it doesn't explain anything. Halp? @netbsd

because they are full of ASBESTOS https://www.gov.uk/product-safety-alerts-reports-recalls/product-recall-primark-halloween-gonks-2610-0004

They had to recall all the gonks

for fuck's sake :blobfoxdisapprove:

Legitimately my biggest worries are audio and video. I was not able to get far enough with NetBSD before my only means of networking stopped functioning to test things like audio. I also found out my networking went kaput when trying to install the package that let me use other screen resolutions... apparently you are locked to 1024x768 until you install an extra package that SHOULD BE something included in core??

Decided to do that hardware probe thing and see just how bad things will be overall for #NetBSD, and https://bsd-hardware.info/?probe=4e274ddb05 uhh... am I boned

EDIT: Link seems to break, so go here http://linux-hardware.org/?probe=4e274ddb05 and then at the bottom of page click "How it fits BSD?"

@netbsd still failing. Why the hell is this being so difficult? Am I hitting a stupid gotcha?

WELP, I attempted to install #NetBSD today, but I ran into some serious problems. Namely, after following the instructions on the official website to write the installer image to my USB thumbdrive (which keep changing what the block size should be!), the resulting drive fails to find the kernel and won't go further than the boot prompt. I'm trying some other dd flags and am about to try again, but if this doesn't work SOMEBODY is going to need to step up. Tagging @netbsd because you're the most obvious person here to ask for help with installing NetBSD

FYI: if you or a loved one are using Firefox on CDE, please make sure to DISABLE tabs combined with the title bar. Dtwm gets uncomfortable when that happens and you lose the ability to move or resize the window.

This toast brought to you by @gemini0 running face-first into this brick wall while getting CDE running on Arch

"Techo how serious are you about this migration?" I just got home from Walmart with the 2TB NVMe SSD that will become the NetBSD boot disk.
"Wait WHAT" Yeah I'm just as surprised as you are that you can just walk into a Walmart and buy computer hardware now! Only thing they are missing are motherboards

A friend has (in followers only toots??) stated that LKL might work as-is in NetBSD, but doesn't have any BTRFS partitions to test with. If anyone else reading this thread can give it a shot and cook up usage documentation, we might finally have a solution. And the solution would be that Rick and Morty meme:
🐧What is my purpose?
🐺BTRFS driver
🐧Oh, my God
