Apparently, over on Bluesky, worrying about the mental health effects of chatbots means I'm discriminating against people with mental illness
Sometimes I wonder why I bother. Retail or tourism is starting to look good in comparison 😑

Granted, I'm currently only getting this pushback from agent-using web developers, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's an actual talking point among the pro-"AI" crowd.
@baldur ?!
@ericsedge It's exhausting.
@baldur I'm exhausted.
@ericsedge @baldur whataboutism is exhausting. 😦
@baldur huh?!
Yeah.
Apparently talking about how I've been seeing more and more people exhibit weird behaviours with chatbot use and worrying that this might mean the mental health effects are genuine means I'm accusing people of being psychotic and discriminating against people with mental illness.
I'm tired.
@baldur @SaraSoueidan Same here. Very tired. Arguing against this nonsense takes energy, Brandolini got it right.
“The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it.”
And these snake oil merchants are relying on it to get away with the lies.
@thirstybear @baldur This is exactly why I fear that spreading awareness is not going to be as effective as one would hope. I’ve been seeing and reading more about what AI is causing society-wide and it’s making me far less optimistic about the future. I’m still formulating my own thoughts at this stage but will start to write a bit about the effects in my own words at some point.
the future is truly scary
@baldur @SaraSoueidan They don't care about people with mental illness. If they're offended you might be calling them psychotic, they show a clear value system in which mental illness is a stigma they don't want to be associated with.
The accusations you might offend mentally ill people are just window dressing.
@baldur
Except for the "sharing air with people in the middle of an ongoing pandemic, where everyone pretends the disabling disease doesn't exist, while slashing healthcare funds" (written as someone dealing for over a quarter of a century with type 1 diabetes caused by a flu infection)
@baldur 🫂
@baldur The internet at large is so full of bean soup/so you hate waffles people. My bluesky is actually relatively peace, but that kinda behaviour was why part of why I left Facebook and Twitter. I'm too old and too tired to be getting into internet fights.
