... which being relatively new and small at the time was much, much more friendly.
Last time I went was well over a decade ago, and it was still strangely OK, despite its size.
But I guess I have a "limit" of sorts. There's a scale that just stops making sense. And the scale is really mostly about how people behave.
Quoting for a semi-related topic: DOA was never really my scene.

I don't regret going one bit!
But there were too many drugs. I pulled some acquaintances out of the gutter who were too gone on shrooms to understand they were lying in a ditch others pissed in.
Property was destroyed. Injured folk ignored. It was very much a festival that felt everyone was mostly out for themselves.
But I saw some pretty great bands.
Around the same time, I started going to Wacken,..
The data center is on fire. The crowd starts chanting "the roof is on fire, let the motherfuckers burn". And some idiots keep throwing stuff onto the fire to feed it.
This post is about LLMs and climate change.
I was at Dynamo Open Air a few times in the 90s, but looking at the lineups, I mostly recall '96 and '99.

I think it must have been 1999 then that the party tent caught fire. The crowd started chanting the then relatively new Fire Water Burn chorus from the Bloodhound Gang. I left, but friends told me that some stoned metalheads thought it was funny to throw floor boards on the fire to feed it.
At any rate, that's a vivid mental image these days:
"Alien is a movie where nobody listens to the smart woman, and then they all die except for the smart woman and her cat.
Four (⭐⭐⭐⭐) stars."
So @osnews is entirely a volunteer effort, and it's thanks to my readers that I can keep the lights on. It's my full-time job that supports my family. Since my wife cannot currently work due to work-caused health issues, our kids and us rely on OSNews quite a bit.

I don't run any ads, do not use any "AI" whatsoever, and unlike virtually every other tech site out there, OSNews is not owned by some media conglomerate telling me to be nice to the tech billionaires I report on. That makes OSNews one of the very few places left that actually doesn't take big tech's bullshit.
Let's keep it that way. Also, donations keep the bunny emoji happy: :bunhdhappy:
I had to fix some small kerning errors in the text, and I forgot to add the shading under the chin. All fixed now, as close to the original cross-stitch as it will ever get.

POLL: I'm thinking about designing a 3D thing to 3D print. What software (that isn't on a web browser) should I learn a bit about?
I cannot emphasize enough how horrid Claude Code (and every other LLM) is at systems code
it’s horrid at everything, but when torvalds pretends it’s any good for kernel work he’s trying to talk over a clear pattern of failures
I cannot name a single vibed piece of systems code that actually works with anything approaching basic reliability
torvalds’ proof that any of this shit does anything at all is that:
- it shit out a generic python UI for one of his side projects
- the corporations funding him via the Linux Foundation and keeping him fat in tokens say it works great
that’s it. that’s where all his confidence comes from. that and him being a mediocre little fucker.

I received a couple replies to this that basically asked, "Who the fuck is saying such a ridiculous thing as what you suggest?"
The answer is, it is literally the stance of the United Nations, and thus the stance of the International Energy Agency and basically every other institution that is the source of climate science and plans for adaptation.
Like, it is *literally* the whole gameplan: poach from Indigenous people and hope for the best. Our technologies are openly framed as able to *thrive* under climate breakdown.
That is... I don't know how to write words in a text box that convey how alarmingly incorrect that claim is.
Like they're saying that these technologies are demonstrably succeeding... in conditions *which don't exist yet because **they're in the future.***
And again, this weird absolute impossible claim is used to justify everything from not funding renewable energy to funding petrol extraction... both of which, ironically, fund the displacement of Indigenous peoples.
Please don't be smug about personally knowing better if you're still accepting the boundaries and conditions of systems that *don't*. Your personal beliefs are literally meaningless, in any way that matters, except how you use them to move the actions of the systems you're a part of.
Responding to me or subposting me... does not really do that.
I asked a trusted colleague for comments on a written document and they fed it in to chatGPT and sent me back that output and I just want to cry.
Guess I won't be asking that person for help or advice on anything anymore. Enshittification happens in people's writing skills too, I guess.
I also have absolutely no idea how to respond to them. If you're that far down the genAI black hole I don't think pointing out the ethical/environmental/cognitive issues will help. Fuck.
... this is exactly what you do: curiosity got the better of you, but book worms aren't quite so nourishing, so you do need to escape L-space after all!
And get a free book if you do 😁
I know some of y'all would love a place like that.

... down, of course I could see similar doors to the one I had peeked through, spaced at just the right distance to map them to the store fronts above me.
Which is to say, if you had keys, you could literally walk into one of these magical bookstores, and out another.
I didn't do that. I didn't want to be trapped in the rubbish tunnel. I guess I was not *that* enticed after all.
But the general layout, well. It does remind me a lot of L-space.
Now imagine an escape room scenario where...

...never forget!
You see, there weren't any more books. There was an underground road.
When I say "road", I mean it was wider than your typical hallway. One of those oversized golf cart style urban rubbish collector cars would have fit through.
And in fact, there sitting next to the door were rubbish bags. I'm pretty sure that was the whole point of this passage, to allow for easy garbage disposal without obstructing the traffic outside and littering the streets.
But looking up and...

Due to this decidedly non-Euclidean layout, one needed to have the courage to explore a little, too! Sometimes a door was locked. And sometimes it was just closed because someone kicked away the wedge that held it open, and you never knew what treasures lay beyond.
So every closed door was an invitation. "Go see what's behind me!", they whispered enticingly. And I followed their siren call.
One day, I opened a door that I had never seen unlocked before, and it led me to a place I shall...

... from there. I'm sure some of them had stairs into the floor above, but I most recall those that burrowed downstairs: not just one floor, but in at least one case several of them.
The basement rooms never seemed to line up with the floor plans of the shops above them. I'm not sure how much they had broken down walls between buildings and rearranged them. Shelves stacked to the ceiling not just in the rooms, but in the hallways and staircases. In short, paradise!
