My mastodon instance of 1 user is getting hammered to its limits by AI scrapers.

Gigabytes of cached data and bandwidth for absolutely nothing.

Low disk space. Energy spikes. Memory spikes. CPU spikes. Human labor...

The cost is truly staggering, and this is for a single instance belonging to a single, otherwise insignificant individual.

Imagine the scale of resource abuse, theft, and climate destruction across the internet.

Just so people can use a shitty #AI prompt on their shitty site.

There's a really cool alignment feature in CSS Grid Lanes that makes items stretch along the stacking axis, filling any remaining empty space.

It's great when you don't want the usual jagged edge at the end of your layout.

Wrote about it here ➡️ https://patrickbrosset.com/articles/2026-06-19-alignment-in-css-grid-lanes/#:~:text=Aligning%20items%20within%20their%20lanes

What language do you speak best? (Hypothesis: There are many French & German speakers in the Fediverse.)

:fediverse: Boosts appreciated!

You know the worst part is? I feel guilty for taking time to rest.

What has modern tech culture done to us?!

I'm sick in bed with a strong flu (which is almost offending because I haven't been sick in a long time 🥲) so I thought to myself: "I'm gonna relax and read a book"

So I bought a book about excellence. I've barely made it a few pages in before I thought to myself "yeah this isn't gonna happen" 🥲

My ability to sustain focus and retain information is practically down to zero.

So, a boring rest and lots of hot fluids it is. And probably a comforting movie.

It's taken a little while, but all the videos from Inclusive Design 24 #id24 have now been manually recaptioned.

I blogged about my picks for the Interop 2027 project: https://www.sarasoueidan.com/blog/interop-2027-rankings/

inspired by @vale @pawelgrzybek @tylersticka @ohhelloana.blog and others who have blogged about their rankings.

Page says “If there are features you don't know or even feel negatively about, leave them unranked.”

I did secretly wish there was a downvote feature for those features I “feel negatively about” 😜 #HTML #a11y #CSS

Going through the Interop list of features https://interop-rank.fxdx.dev and selecting and ranking the ones I want to see across browsers in 2027.

I chose 15 features.

At the top of my list are #HTML #a11y features `focusgroup`, ariaNotify(), `headingoffset` and `headingreset`.

My top three #CSS feature requests are interpolate-size, `display` transition/animation, and `border-shape`.

As I warned about months ago now, I can confirm that Google Chrome's #AI API is now actively being used for device fingerprinting and tracking purposes.

Out of 100 of the top global english language content sites - around 30% are actively using the API for fingerprinting, Google Advertising (profiling) or both) without the legally required consent (EU law).

After a decade at Cloudinary, I am looking work.

I'm a web developer who's done a lot of devrel, too. I'm good at:

- building on the front of the front end,

great at:

- the web platform (browsers and standards),
- researching and communicating the hows and whys of all sorts of things,

and the stem of my T-shaped skills is:

- "images, on the internet".

If you could use any of that or know someone who could – hit me up!

I’ve spent the better part of the last 2 years both using coding models and trying to help these models deliver higher quality code and I honestly could not agree more with Zach here… https://www.zachleat.com/web/ai-websites/

"Now I understand! The Popover API can work with CSS anchor positioning. Let me fix this properly…"

Yes, let me help you again, dear LLM. It’s not that they can do all of this by default on their own.

Careful with these “AI assistant” services … as many have been saying, there’s a steep privacy cost.

Practical Accessibility by @SaraSoueidan - highly, highly recommended!

I already have the new “Accessible UX Research” book by Dr Michele A. Williams, classics such as the „Web Accessibility Cookbook“ by @matuzo, and “Inclusive Components” by @heydon and having an eye on the “Practical Accessibility” course by @SaraSoueidan 👀

If you’d have some education budget to blow before end of the year, what #web #accessibility related things would you spend it on? 💸

Any #courses, #books, etc. to recommend? (Conferences excluded unfortunately)

"The totalistic ambition of the AI industry to bring everything and everyone in line with an ever-expanding AI enterprise might be interpreted as the realisation of this world-as-machine. Whether it is energy or water resources that must be made available to feed AI data centres or whether it is all of our data being fed into large language model training, the AI industry’s appetite for accumulation, as Anders would put it, is insatiable."

"When I do generate content using #AI, I find that the requirement to check it for accuracy negates any time saved during the writing part."

This has always been my experience with tools that are aimed to do the work on your behalf, including #CSS frameworks (when they were most popular).
