jesus christ, Linux has had a 100% LLM takeover.
this project is completely cooked.
even after the AI bubble pop, it's not clear how to recover from this level of bullshit from this level of bullshitter.

> Linus Torvalds believes that blaming LLMs for the kernel community's problems is wrong, when the problem is LLM users who do not understand how to use them or how the kernel works. A properly trained LLM is a useful tool, but it takes a lot of time to reach that point.
> Torvalds and others repeatedly said low-quality contributions from new developers should receive low priority, and that the community should stop trying to make contribution easy. Many developers said, repeatedly, that trying to mentor those developers is almost always a waste of time; they do not listen.
> There is some concern about companies maintaining private kernels with LLM help, but there does not seem to be much to be done about it.
> Kernel developers should not be required to use LLMs to work in the community, but those who do need to have enough resources available to generate acceptable results.
The requirement to add Assisted-by tags to patches created with LLMs will be removed, but maintainers still want to know about how a patch was created.
so how's it going already?
> The development community is struggling to keep up with the flood of security patches, and will continue to for some time. Some of the most urgent fixes may bypass maintainers and go straight to Torvalds. Maintainers were cautioned against telling their employers about vulnerabilities before public disclosure happens.
Really, I'm not out to suck as much ass as Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect.

It’s not our job to fix our employers
It’s not our job to fix our employers
This broken industry is too big of a problem for software developers to solve alone with unions

And don't accept the idea that needing support makes you weak. We all become who we are partly through the understanding, kindness and opportunities that other people make available to us.

To explain what I mean by this: for a long time the Perl community took great pride in how difficult and terse the language was. The old joke that well-written perl was indistinguishable from line noise wasn't just a joke, it was a badge of honour.
That attitude was sustainable when the internet was small and alternatives were scarce. But the moment tools appeared that prioritized things like human ergonomics (python) and human interaction (ruby) the perl community started aging out and dying.
Today the number of people under 50 who'll reach for perl or raku or who cares what it's called as their first choice of tool for anything new is zero. In practice Perl is an esolang now.
Torvalds' position is that contributing to the kernel should be _more_ difficult for everyone else, but, through LLM usage, easier for existing kernel developers.
Ted Tso's adamant position that "you can't make us learn Rust" is the same insularity.
If the kernel was a country, we'd recognize this.
RE: https://woof.tech/@techokami/117439226690379216
The LLM part is bad news but it isn't the sign. It's the talking about planning succession while simultaneously complaining that nobody new wants to learn, that's the sign.
Y'all the kernel is in deep, deep trouble. We saw what happened to Perl and the kernel is in deep trouble.
Another abandoned car. I didn't get close enough to see the brand.

Granted, I'm currently only getting this pushback from agent-using web developers, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's an actual talking point among the pro-"AI" crowd.
Apparently, over on Bluesky, worrying about the mental health effects of chatbots means I'm discriminating against people with mental illness
Sometimes I wonder why I bother. Retail or tourism is starting to look good in comparison 😑
I've been asked by several clients over the past year to help them find senior software engineering talent. You need to play down the "AI" rhetoric if you want to attract people who genuinely care about the work and who really know what they're doing.
Advertising that you intend to install them into some kind of "reverse centaur" role will pretty much guarantee they won't be applying.
How much slop is in Linux now? Ehh we decided not to tell you

lol yeah sure, bro, your datacenter sized LLM is going to install itself on a device whose flash size is measured in the megabytes 🙄
fucking stochastic script kiddies, the whole lot of them
I just don't have any desire to use #AI, for anything. It does not interest me at all.
. . .
None of the #AI tools available to me are anything I have use for. It's all solutions I don't want for problems I don't have.
. . .
PS, to my fellow writers and artists of all stripes: It is a uniquely demoralizing time to be working right now, I know. But please don't stop. Do it for love, or do it for spite, whatever gets you through the day. But do not stop. They don't get to win.

My mastodon instance of 1 user is getting hammered to its limits by AI scrapers.
Gigabytes of cached data and bandwidth for absolutely nothing.
Low disk space. Energy spikes. Memory spikes. CPU spikes. Human labor...
The cost is truly staggering, and this is for a single instance belonging to a single, otherwise insignificant individual.
Imagine the scale of resource abuse, theft, and climate destruction across the internet.
Just so people can use a shitty #AI prompt on their shitty site.
