Oct 9, 2026, 2:08 AMBut DON'T WORRY EVERYONE, the FCC will almost certainly approve SpaceX's one million satellite filing soon, so this will seem like nothing!

Oof. My dark sarcasm levels have shot through the roof and entered orbit. Time to sign off for the night.

The situation is also through the roof. We're with you. We're glad someone is paying attention.

Some situations call for dark sarcasm.
Ken Butlernxskok@cupoftea.socialOct 9, 2026, 2:49 AM@ldmay65 @sundogplanets but not in the classroom. Teacher, leave them kids alone (all in all, you're just another brick in the wall).

@ldmay65 @sundogplanets the irony of one of the people I mentioned being at a university.
Patrick Hadfieldpatrickhadfield@mastodon.scotOct 9, 2026, 4:02 AM@sundogplanets ...where you can take direct action against Starlink?!!
Cat WestCatawu@mastodon.socialOct 9, 2026, 7:21 AM@sundogplanets I’d like to see other countries all sue the USA for polluting the skies we all share. Maybe that would give them pause on this “give the billionaires anything, everything their shrivelled little hearts desire.

Careful - it'll get hit by a Starlink satellite.
Oct 9, 2026, 2:11 AM@sundogplanets Oh FFS
Artemysiaartemis@climatejustice.socialOct 9, 2026, 2:16 AM@sundogplanets that line of the tune from Firefly/Serenity regularly comes to mind -
'Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me...'Turns out they can, in fact, take the sky from me.
stuart yeatesstuartyeates@cloudisland.nzOct 9, 2026, 2:16 AMDon't worry, a single EMP in low earth orbit should take them all out, right?
Enemy of the Empirephasorburn@phasorburn.comOct 9, 2026, 2:50 AM@stuartyeates @sundogplanets Multiple EMP would be needed since they encompass the earth in a shell. Then the satellites would not be able to be controlled for collision avoidance. Hello Kessler Syndrome.
Better to just ask Grok to take control and deorbit them all into the ocean at Point Nemo.- Prof. Sam Lawlersundogplanets@mastodon.socialOct 9, 2026, 1:33 PM
@phasorburn @stuartyeates A colleague told me about a talk she saw at a UN conference on nuclear war (!!) where they did a bunch of simulations and (this is my second-hand understanding) that a lot of the radiation from a nuclear explosion in orbit ends up getting trapped in Earth's magnetic field lines, so many (possibly all) satellites fly through and get fried, no matter where the explosion was.
Nuclear explosions in orbit (or anywhere!) are very very bad.

@phasorburn @stuartyeates The author of that study was very unhappy to hear about our study showing that if all satellites in orbit lose control at once, the expectation time to a collision is just over 2 days https://outerspaceinstitute.ca/crashclock/. They thought it would take longer.

Oct 9, 2026, 2:25 AMI tried to start writing parody lyrics to Eminem's stanza in “Without Me” that starts 🎶 The FCC won't let me be … 🎶 but didn't get very far.
And I sure as 🤬 am not going to burn data center time spending LLM-gen-AI tokens on making the joke for me (it wouldn't be good anyway).
So, please insert here a stanza of your own making to the tune of that rap about FCC, Elon Musk, and Starlink.
Come to think of it, I suspect Elon & Eminem might share a worldview. 🤔
