Black folk: This is the kind of racism I get on fedi and why I don't feel safe here.
Two people on infosec.exchange: I'm going to reply with something racist that fits the kind of racism you say you experience here.
.art: *forwards reports for racism*
Infosec.exchange: *crickets*
Another Black person: Fedi is full of anti-Blackness
i.e mod: Report it to us! We'll listen and learn and fix it!
Me: well, here's two reports where there was a racism and you didn't fix it.

@Curator Is infosec.exchange that bad? I’m much more of a lurker than a poster, as I mainly use it for news and current events. I don’t want to be associated with a place that’s getting a bad rep though. Any suggestions for other cybersecurity or similar instances that are better?

@Volwren Not really, infosec.exchange was kinda the last of the big techy instances that we *hadn't* blocked - they tend to attract white techbros with masses of privilege. I'll ask around though!

@Curator I’ve heard concerns about Hachyderm too (but nobody ever seems to say anything concrete).
Good sign if .art hasn’t blocked it — but really worrying if all the other tech instances are so bad.
Perhaps I need to get back to learning to draw and move to .art.

@Curator Totally unrelated but marginally related to a tiny subsection of the linked conversation:
I also got moderated for swearing very recently on a non-fedi community forum of a project I used to be a huge fan and booster of, after a retort from another user was excessively rude, and I was told (after the head dev came in to cheer for the rude guy, for no reason whatsoever) that it's fine to express yourself in a more raw fashion.
I tend to try to be extremely polite on those sorts of forums, cause you'll have kids and parents and who knows what all there, but if those were the rules, I tagged in the rude guy and told him to go fuck himself, and that's when they decided oh no, too raw buddy.
On a totally unrelated note, would anyone like to buy a Zynthian V5?

why are some words considered "bad" words? of course there are bad words that are intended to hurt people, which decent people in society don't use bc they are harmful
then there are "swear" words, generally designated as such by religious moralists, but actually cause no harm to anyone. yet so many people get their panties in a twist over the word "fuck". it's fucking stupid 😁💙

Looks like defcon harbors this type, too based on my encounter with one of their obnoxious windbags yesterday.
My new proposal is that we replace the entire internet with old tin cans and pieces of string so we can just get around without talking to any tech bros at all. :/

@Curator Thank you for sharing this information. I have curated my infosec.exchange that bigotry didn't present itself. As I work in infosec, I have been using infosec.exchange as a source of news and blog posts for professional purposes, in a place that doesn't have bigotry, and cult mentality of tech bros.
I will be leaving and encouraging anyone with a conscious to leave themselves.
The pressure in infosec, to have a job, without the pressure at becoming a cyber pig gets more every month as fascism gains more power.

@CaptMorgan https://infosec.exchange/@magnesium - the post has been deleted but the context was a Black person saying 'I've experienced harassment here and these methods to deal with it don't work for me', and this person replying suggesting one of the mentioned methods.

@CaptMorgan https://infosec.exchange/@crankylinuxuser/ - reported for very very blatant racism (taking umbrage with white people being called 'white' and explaining race to a Black person. Initially nothing was done, then when I kicked up a public fuss from my other account Jerry deleted the post but left the user. It's only now that we said we're defederating that the user has been removed.
