The hardest problem in computer science is keeping your mouth shut when you're looking over someone's shoulder and they don't use the same shortcuts you do

@ricci I can't watch other people use computers at all. I always think "why did you...? oh no"

@jima So uh I was working decades ago with a large defense contractor who had their own internal networking testbed that served some of the same purposes that our testbed, Emulab, did. Many of their teams much preferred to use ours, instead of the one they had developed, and their developers were a bit peeved about this

I learned the reason for this preference during a site visit

To define experiments in Emulab, you wrote a script in Tcl, which kinda ew.

To define experiments in their internal tool, you described network topologies using Excel. Somehow. And I assume lost half your remaining sanity points in the process.

@ssamulczyk How did you know that I just switched windows with the mouse instead of a keyboard shortcut???

@ricci I find the hardest part to keep everybody convinced that I know what I’m doing 😆

@ricci I don't think I have this issue, but my Windows-user-sisters-boyfriend does annoy me about using the keyboard all the time, CALM DOWN. You're teaching me something else, I'll optimize it my way later.

@ricci or that don’t use short cuts. At all. Every single operation involves going to the menu bar and searching for the right option.

@ricci I taught somebody about tab autocompletion on the command line once, when I was helping him with a task. He was very impressed, then immediately went back to typing out every long path manually. It was so painful 😩
