It's all fun and games to hate on the weird math problems they give you in school, until you need to measure 1/2 cup for your recipe and all you can find are the 1/3 and 3/4 cup measuring cups

@chefraven whenever I think I have a strong intuitive understanding of fractions I just look at imperial screw and drill bit sizes to humble myself again

@ricci I convert them to a common fraction base and go from there.... So many Kumon worksheets....

@ricci (Note the junctions marked with a “+” mean that you should add both of the indicated endpoints.)

@ricci It's a covariant/contravariant tensor index thing, learning to cook should not be attempted until at least three semesters of abstract algebra or a physics curriculum including general relativity have been completed.

@ricci multiply the 3/4 cup by the 1/3 cup and use the resulting measure twice 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

@eeide I have a 2/3 cup one too! And I never use them so I always know where they are!

@ricci I absolutely can't ever be arsed to find the right one. I eyeball it every time. They would kick me out of cake school

@lindsey I firmly believe that there are things mankind was not meant to measure, like oil and salt

@ricci I had an international student once who remarked to me that her baking was going a lot better now that she had discovered that "one cup" was an American unit of measurement and not, like, a reference to any cup you just happened to have around

@dan @ricci My early days of cooking in undergrad, I’d ask my mom measurements for spices and it always came down to a single spoon in our kitchen.

Funny part is, I have basically become her as I have a spoon in my spice box, and that’s my unit of measurement. It is not even a standard tbsp!

This is one reason why I could never bake!

@vish @dan I have a measuring spoon labeled "one perfect cup of tea". I have no idea where it came from. I used it for years and years and years assuming it was a teaspoon. It was not. But my food has a lot of flavor!

@ricci I know I’ll start a flame, but why just not going decimal and use a scale?

Or we still want to continue to live in the timeline where #sega released the 32x and #minidisc never took over CDs and thumbdrives? 😁
