if you put an llm in the box, it achieves a superposition state where it is simultaneously a tool and not a tool.. mathematically, both things are true at the same time; until, when you open the box, the llm collapses into one state (i don't care about llms so i threw the box in the ocean and it remains a mystery, sorry)

benchmarking is hell

psa if your #nix pure shell environment doesn't make tls connections, include `cacerts` and if it has trouble reading text files set both LANG and LOCALE_ARCHIVE (or from within a program, configure the locale manually)

Ok, chill out.

If anyone has suggestions for what to call this kind of completeness, I'd like to hear 'em!

So we're talking about a different kind of completeness here -- not completeness of the type system (which we usually *don't* have), but of something else. I'm not actually sure what to call this thing that we're now asking about completeness of! I'm honestly not sure I've ever thought about the difference (if any!) between saying that e : T and saying that there is a derivation tree with e : T at the bottom (even if we don't know exactly which derivation tree it is, although often we do).

A student asked me a weird question about type systems today. Instead of the usual kind of completeness question, i.e., "are there any terms that would be fine to run, but are not well typed?" (for which the answer is generally that yes, there are), their question was "are there any terms that are well typed, but for which there is no typing derivation?" For this second question, the answer is usually that *no*, there are not, and it's a good thing, too, because we *need* that typing derivation.

a friend just said they don't think they can put linux on an old computer that "only has 4gb ram" 😬

Kids, this week is the purge!

I feel like someone here would appreciate this. found on the street

Found a package on the side of the road, several blocks from its address. I was going past so I dropped it off. I saw a worried FedEx person partway to the destination. Maybe flew off the truck?

Folks

it's hardly ever either-or

Programs pass through this tiled architecture, end to end, until transformed into their result. Since the architecture repeats, additional capacity is obtained by adding more tiles.

a good article on the effect of AI on intellectual communities: https://borretti.me/article/no-man-is-an-island (h/t @darius for the link)

this I think better articulates some of the worries I have about the effect of LLMs on human inquiry that Lemire's optimistic take misses.
