I wish Mastodon had a convenient way to mute a conversation thread that you've not participated in. Like it's perfectly fine that people I follow are having long conversations in another language, but I can't read it and it doesn't look interesting or relevant, so it'd be nice to just mute the thread.

It's been just over two weeks since I badgered my shrink to supply me with HSV antivirals for my Ménière's disease and I've not had one serious episode since the second day. As a reminder, I'd been getting "lie down and close my eyes because that's literally all I can do to stop the vertigo" episodes roughly every two days for two months prior.

Apparently it's important to do this protocol within two years of getting Ménière's or it's less effective. And it doesn't seem to work for younger cases (it's considered idiopathic - of unknown origin and just a set of symptoms, so there can be multiple causes).

This is not a scientific study, IANAD, etc. But it seems to work for me.

First bike commute in dense fog. I did not expect to get so wet. Had to stop and clean my glasses off a few times.

Anyway if lots of rate limit pills are the price of not finding out what the "final" version of Mastodon 5 looks like for as long as possible, I will chow down on the rate limit pills. I feel I have put a lot of sometimes-helpful work into filing Mastodon bugs in the past and I'm just not going to do the free QA this time. I am so, so tired. https://mastodon.social/@hyc/117473710410342345

Soon GoatOS will have a micropub client that I can use to post to my blob.

Biggest frustration I'm having with masto-fe so far is that when I make a post there's a pretty long delay (compared to being directly logged in to mastodon) before my new post appears in any of the columns on screen, which is very frustrating if you're trying to build a thread.

Also, it doesn't appear to have a WebWorker or whatever it is that tabs use to share data, so if you accidentally open more than one masto-fe tab at a time you start getting a lot of these little guys very quickly.

I found a cool 3D model that holds both a small eink display and a bluetooth keyboard. I successfully modified it to fit a Seeed Sticky complete with magnet pockets. Pretty stoked.

My OS adopted an ugly visual style so I stopped using that OS and then my web browser adopted an ugly visual style so that it would look like the OS I stopped using so I stopped using that browser and then the websites I visit adopted an ugly visual style so they it would look consistent with the browser I stopped using on the OS I stopped using. And now in addition to being ugly, the websites I visit look inconsistent with the browser and OS I actually use.

Ah, bummer. $1000 spent and victimized by a Russian bot army, The Forkiverse (Mastodon instance) is shutting down. #podcast https://www.searchengine.show/vladimir-putins-forkiverse

Now that I've done the process by hand, though, I have a pretty good understanding of what it looks like, so now I'm in a much better position to automate this process, with the automation presumably not making whatever mistake my fallable human brain made to miss the true-lowest possibility.

I now believe I *could* finish this puzzle by my self-imposed deadline, but maybe I won't, since I got 1.5 hours of sleep last night and I'm leaving to go to the doctor. Uh… now.

Not only one of the finest #cybrefunk tracks of all time, but also one of my favorite album covers.

There's something satisfying about seeing a job posting that a recruiter reached out to you about 3 months ago and turned down continuing to be reposted on LinkedIn. By now I'm convinced they're just a ghost job after all, because there's more than enough desperate people who will apply to anything.

BBS had a task running long last night - nothing wrong, just working as fast as a 2Mhz machine can run. It's done and accepting calls. #bbs.

This isn't so bad either except the forking *continues*; I'm quickly testing 3 parallel worlds, then one dies off. I basically manage until I hit digit 14 of 16, which turns out to have **six** different next options. I sort of do my best from there and eventually find a number: 165523097481149 (octal 4550533133267675).

It's wrong. It's too high. There are apparently multiple correct solutions, and AOC guy (so says the problem solution) wants the *lowest*. Which I fumbled.

I once broke up with a cisman who then proceeded to tell me he kept a rope in the trunk of his car and he was going to hang himself, and you think your hot ass who meets none of my standards is going to keep me on the hook? Be so supercalifragilisticexpialidociously fucking real.

…I can test as many candidate numbers as I want at once and see the results in bulk. I do this to (see images above) find the correct digit one octal at a time left to right, each octal input digit matching one more digit in the output list.

This works great until my number suddenly "forks". On the 8th (1-indexed) digit, either 1 or 5 produces a matching result. So after that point, instead of testing 8 at a go I'm testing 16, simultaneously testing "world 1" and "world 5".

So here's what I did. I changed my linear scan so instead of just counting up from 0, it takes a list of numbers from STDIN. This allowed me to make a file containing a batch of numbers I want to check all at once (which I filter through perl -e 'while (<>) { last unless /\d/; $_ = oct($_); print "$_\n"; }', since I never figured out how to access the documented octal support library in Idris). This lets me test every leftmost digit, every one-right-of-leftmost digit, etc…

…The #DOJ said the 28 people who were charged as part of a sweep dubbed Operation Protect the Vote are lawful permanent residents — but not US citizens who are permitted to legally vote [maybe no one informed them of that restriction]. They are charged with crimes including making false statements on a naturalization application & submitting fraudulent voter registrations.
