going back to physical media (books, DVDs, CDs, vinyl) is making me think a lot about how much easier it was to tell someone “hey, listen or watch or read this!” back then than it is now

@anna The wild times of the '80s to early '10s, when people actually shared physical media with their friends and acquaintances!

    What a concept 💿

@jra I was reminded of CD+DVD concert recording combos when I brought back my old CDs from my parents’ house, and those DVD companions from old magazines. We even found a recording from Jean-Michel Jarre‘s famous concert in Moscow, and I can’t wait to show that to my FIL!

@anna I think about it a lot, like with playlists.

Even if the person has purchased all the same songs (or more likely access to them), you need to go through the store to share the list itself, or a bunch of cumbersome tools. And that is already jumping through the hoops and not "lending" what we got.

It should be easier, but then it becomes piracy because it is "too easy", so every legal platform and every mainstream piece of software is anathema to sharing media. Even disregarding the price itself, it is about control.

@eldaking Years ago, I created a zine for a friend to introduce them to my favorite Brazilian music translating lyrics from Portuguese to English. Since we live in different countries but we were going to meet in person, the easiest option to share the actual albums and my custom playlist was a flash drive with MP3s. 🤷🏻 Different licensing deals would prevent them from listening to the music or the specific versions I picked.

@anna People think I'm strange when I tell them that if they want to share music with me, give me FLACs.

@anna I recently had a friend do some photography for me. She asked for a USB drive to give me the finished photos then came by my apartment a few days later to drop it off. It was a nice exchange. Maybe I'll try doing more of that. Maybe I'll get a bunch of USB drives to lend out like books.

@David I still talk about music with friends, but a lot of it is behind the doors of streaming platforms. But a couple of friends who are singers of mine starting hosting listening and jam sessions, and that has reignited the social aspect of music. I still hasn’t managed to do something similar with movies or TV shows, though. But I did visit a video rental store in São Paulo back in May!

@anna I found a hand-made playlist on a burned CD when moving. Brought me back. Building a playlist on streamers doesn’t feel the same. Lean towards just listening to albums now.

@tiydude My spouse and I did that right in the beginning of our relationship. I got myself a CD player and I’ve been listening to entire albums too. I was already doing that with my Tangara, but CDs hit differently.
