    Everyone loves shitting on the Romance genre, but quite frankly, if the men paid at all any spec of attention to the consent happening in those novels, the world would be a far better place. “is this comfortable? Can I touch you here? I need your full consent before we do this. Does that feel good? How do you feel?”

    You can find all those empowering questions, and more, in Romance novels everyone hates so much.

    How I usually find Romances is below.

    @WeirdWriter there is some interesting conversations around that in the female adjacent booktok community on Instagram where some guys are talking about what you can learn from her favorite novels

    @jenni Ah! I am not in those spaces, but is there a YouTube video covering those discussions? I'd love to listen to more! I write M/M or M/M/M Romances and I read all kinds of Romances in all sub-genres so I noticed it a lot lately!

    @artbysarahsammis Indeed! The more I read Romance too, the more I am beginning to back away from men that willingly have never read a Romance book and are proud of it or think it is only a kink fantasy. I write Romance, but the ones that unironically tell me reading books about human conflict and human expression isn't realistic are men that don't do well around friends or dates or partners, TBH.

    Also, romance often displays helpful friendships. And non-heroic ways to help people like sitting on the couch with them while they are crying. Those are basic emotional skills.

    @WeirdWriter that sounds like some Young Adult shit, to be honest. But it would be a good lithmus test to go through; - I could never read a book with those kinds of phrasings; past being a Young Adult stage person; I meant. If people need to hear those kinds of clues, then, obviously they should start around there, but I'd suggest reading Female authors instead; if those kinds of clues are too basic to have to plow/stumble through.

    Women write Romance novels, not men. LOL! Adult women. But YA books don't even have those phrasings in them. But you should try reading some YA, because none of those things is in there. @toots

    @WeirdWriter by YA I meant 7th-to-9th grade level literature. Why would grown women want that kind of dialogue you presented there? - It's on a 7th-to-9th grade level, dude.

    Anyone else would hate to plow through dialogue that read/sounded like that; - I'd think, right?

    @toots @WeirdWriter uhhhhh the kind of scene that follows “I need your full consent before we do this.” is NOT something appropriate for a YA novel

    I wouldn't take them seriously anyway if they can't tell the difference between childish and dark Romance, but then again, the kinds of people that are actively proud they've never read a Romance novel or think it's just sex literature are the kind of vapid people that can't understand why they are a snooze at relationships or friendships. @sus @toots

    @WeirdWriter

    40 years of reading romances, from bodice rippers to teen's first romance, did good fucking work when I finally found someone.

    "I wish there were a manual for dealing with women." "My brother, have you ever read a romance in your life?"

    I'd suggest this requires recommendations for peeps who are not used to the genre and/or "if you're reading one book/series, read X"

    Nah, way too hard to recommend something on here. For others that like tough stories though I would recommend Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan @jherazob
