For example, one of the things we might not want to emulate about the Amish is the complete ostracization and cutting off from all support people who make different choices about a technology

Also there needs to be enormous cultural change around cat ownership in the UK. Introducing an invasive predator that kills millions of birds from species in serious decline is villainous.

Keep your cats inside.

To support declining bird populations the UK must support insect populations, which means getting smarter and more sparing with pesticides and dramatically reducing the use of artificial light at night.

Bonus with reducing ALAN is you get to see the stars again.

Pumpkin pie has about 2-3 g fiber per piece, Brussels sprouts about 3.5g for half a cup and peas 4.5g. Stuffing’s not very impressive unless you’re using whole wheat (4g!).

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! Eat your veg so you don’t end up like Pepys!

Store i used to spend about 1k a year at.

Canada has a huge backlog for knee replacement surgery.

Fortunately if we take people currently considered candidates for knee replacement and give them excellent conservative treatment first, a surprisingly large fraction improve enough that they don’t currently want or immediately need the operation any more.

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1505467

Unfortunately, we aren’t offering folks on the wait list the full spectrum things they’d need to delay or avoid surgery without misery: supervised exercise & physiotherapy, education, dietary/weight-loss support, insoles, plus pain meds.

Just a heads up that if you love optical illusions and sharing then you may want to cw them - they give a small fraction of the population migraines 😣

On the one hand there’s a lot of serious labor issues going on here. On the other hand, imagine if your uncle could show up to your job and tell your boss to stop being such an ass

Oh wow it’s even in the dictionary - actually means more like sticky, like wet clay

Puggy: temporarily soft and squishy

Using the metric system but being so closely tied to the US market means food is sold in weird increments here.

Spent a few hours in the garden this afternoon and got the broad beans and lettuce planted.

This year’s brassica were in the way so i moved anything still alive into pots.

Some of them were lacinato kale i grew from stem cuttings

https://timeloop.cafe/@sus/116037319175350444

They performed pretty poorly this spring/summer and did not have very impressive root systems compared to the seed grown red russian kale. But they have been doing better this fall, so I decided to continue the experiment. I harvested most of the leaves and gave their pots a little fertilizer. We’ll see what they do over the next few months.

In retrospect, i think autumn would be a better time than fall to do stem cuttings for kale, because they won’t immediately throw everything they’ve got into trying to flower.

Last week i threw a bunch of compost around the tomatoes which will endure for another month or so and underplanted them with more lacinato kale and mustard greens i started from seed awhile back. Today i filled in the rest of the bed with lettuce that i’ll harvest over the winter to leave space for radish and arugula in february/march.

The compost i turned and layered last week is cooking now. The garden is starting to look like it’s fall with some yellow and brown leaves, fat spiders, and everything wet.

(This is obviously not something all or even most of my friends with ADHD do, but none of my friends without ADHD have this exact problem.)

I've watched a few friends with unmanaged ADHD completely overwhelm their spaces and housemates with clutter and mess from endless hobbies and half finished projects. It is so painful and I don't really know how to support them.

Like it's unpleasant and somewhat dangerous to be in their spaces, their partners and even children are incredibly frustrated with the environment, they get in trouble with property managers for safety issues. Absolutely no one except them thinks their living space is a safe or pleasant place to be. Yet their response is always 100% angry defence about how it's not actually a problem and other people should clean too and they deserve to have hobbies.

Meanwhile, their 7yo child literally cries about how overwhelming and dirty the living room is and wants to stay with their grandparents and their marriage is completely falling apart over the issue.

Like how do you be helpful when this is happening and all they have are complaints about how other people won't let them have hobbies or are clean freaks?

It's gardener Christmas!

I made a new internet friend a few weeks ago and today I talked to them on the videochats for the first time and it was extremely fun.

Lab grown meat faces extraordinary technical challenges, but I’m glad people keep throwing themselves at the problem because solving it will have extraordinary implications for medicine and pharma.

This would have rapid impacts on the daily lives and wallets of a lot of people - Like the biologics I take would drop from many thousands of dollars a year to hundreds.
