Tried to recover someone's DOCX files, even unzipped them and everything, but I guess they got moved/copied so many times over 3 decades they just... faded and became broken? They were moved/copied so much too much data was lost to where they cannot be recovered. Yet another reason why writers, especially, should move to writing in plain text and converting to anything later. #WritingCommunity #PlainText
“huh huh huh if you’re so unhappy with how linus is leading the kernel, you can always ask for a refund”
bet. where do we send the invoices for all the labor we donated to the Linux ecosystem under a promise that’s now repeatedly been broken? the Foundation can cover it at standard consultants’ rates for commercial work. I haven’t done the accounting, but I imagine they should be able to cover at least a few million dollars worth before they have to start dipping into torvalds’ paycheck
Expanded thoughts on this general theme:
Techbros: no one actually likes writing
Median AO3 account holder: Sorry fam, chapter 179 was delayed by 22 minutes because my leg got stuck in a bear trap
The California gun control that happened in the 1960s was mostly because the Black Panthers walked around with guns.
It will never stop being ironic to me that the one place I am certain never to stumble on LLM slop is piracy websites. I use piracy websites like the best catalog ever and then I go check out media from my local library. I am sure people have tried to upload LLM slop to piracy websites, but the pirates aren't sharing it, buddy. #Piracy
"it's here to stay! you can't get rid of it! stop dreaming of a better world!"
buddy, if i only read books, played games, and listened to music published before this decade, i would never run out of interesting and compelling works of art to feed my mind with. I don't *have* to buy anything you people make.
Something I've noticed while on book tour for the past couple of weeks is that Mastodon is a really good way to let people know about bookstore events. So many people I've met on the road have told me that they found out about my book tour from me or other folks on the fedi. I think it's partly because so many book-loving people are on Mastodon. But also if you compare Mastodon to places like Bluesky or Insta, the community here has a higher percentage of actual humans vs. bots or operatives.
For weeks now I have been encouraging fascist and diet fascists in my offline life to get/try a Tesla flying car because I know natural selection will occur and nothing of value will be lost.
I'm more upset than I've been in a while.
Windows 11 sets the default documents folder to onedrive\documents. Anything that gets saved there gets backed up to one drive. This includes various save games, all my Reaper stuff, and various other odds and ends that I like to, you know, save.
To save disc space, OneDrive also defaults to files being online-only. They're not stored on your device, they're just listed there. So despite what they call it, this is in fact not a backup at all, because it doesn't create an extra copy. It is actually just transferring your most precious, irreplacible, personal files to Microsoft in the background, and trusting that nothing will happen. You can see where this is going, but just to underline the point with a bleeding fucking dagger, I did not ask for any of this, I just clicked save like I have done for the last twenty or so years of my life using Windows.
Since I don't care about and have never intentionally used onedrive, I signed out of it. Flash forward six months, the files that I thought were on my computer (because I can go see them there in the folder) are in fact gone from my hard drive, and also Onedrive nuked them from orbit.
Years of my life, gone without a trace. Thanks so much, Microsoft. Whoever came up with all those ideas probably got massive performance bonuses, because we're in the worst timeline.
Goodnight.
The new #Apple CEO, John Ternus, seems to be much more of a #techbro than any of his predecessors. https://daringfireball.net/linked/2026/10/16/strange-times-make-for-strange-bedfellows

Oh look. Police don't like it when they're tracked! Same reason why I keep saying let's give all Marginalized folks guns for free in my country and watch how fast gun control happens. https://www.jalopnik.com/2288078/man-diy-flock-cameras-police-dont-like-it/ #Privacy
Is anyone else as unreasonably perturbed as I get when encountering a seatbelt where the buckle has inexplicably been flipped around the wrong direction?
Who else out there on the internet cannot rest and enjoy their journey until you have spent time methodically fishing and twisting the belt in order to set things back right and proper again?
(Airplanes and rental cars are some of the most common places I run into this, but I've even found personal friends' vehicles with a buckle turned oddly. How in the world do people manage to do this to themselves?)
Husband begged for an open marriage, eventually I agreed. He has yet to go on a date. I go on a "date" every couple of weeks, but I'm actually just taking my best friend to dinner for a girls night out. If he asks, her name is Michael.

American political commentator Michael Tracey , on Twitterx, doxed the victim of the #Cornell7 and published her name, her address, her phone number, her government id info, and leaked files that could have only come from defense teams.
Jane Doe has been swatted hour after hour. She’s getting death and rape threats by the minute. Her brothers were held at gunpoint during one of the swats.
#MichaelTracey should remember he is real fucking easy to find. And swat boys? You’re script kiddies. As the cybertruck of heavy metal James Hetfield would say; sleep with one eye open.
I am so angry I’m shaking.
Hey modern luddites, you know the luddites did not hate technology right? So why are you saying you hate all technology, even things such as RSS and email and communication based things. I am an actual luddite because I do not hate technology. #Luddite #Tech #Technology
