    RE: hachyderm.io/@rain/11744608334

This is why, when people say things like "omg the LLM can generate an embedded kernel for me!!!" I can't help but think

"Yeah, it was trained on _at least_ three of mine, plus immeasurable training load on my webserver serving the docs."

By claiming ownership of the result, or even just claiming to have managed the machine while it spit it out, you're basically just stripping all attribution for the actual work that went into its inputs. You might as well just clone my repo, remove the license, and remove my name. So no, I am not impressed.

Anyway, Anthropic just ripped off a bunch of Rain's work with no attribution, as they do.

@dysfun to be "fair," both Meta and Google *are* using my kernels quietly and giving nothing back, so it's possible my license is too permissive already

@cliffle I sincerely hope the phrase "it's possible my license is too permissive" is something that haunts us until this field collapses under the weight of environmental catastrophe because, and I do not want to be harsh, we were too naïve to truly believe the social contract of reciprocity would be upheld indefinitely @dysfun

@cliffle So it's accessible to me without visiting Github. That somewhat impresses me. Well, at least, let's say, I cannot complain.

@cliffle @blogdiva @rain Since all these “train” on product already engineered, sweat over, and produced by others, I think their product itself, being a product of outright theft, should be 100% free for the taking. For them to profit off of this makes them A: Thieves, B: Receiving Stolen Goods, C: Profiting from crimes. They should all be free, and or their sellers arrested to face charges.

@cliffle I would like to be clear that this was a team effort across several people, not just mine. Not saying I didn't have a significant role, but I'd have come up with something much worse without the team

@cliffle come to think of it, I can't remember a single "success" story from Anthropic that wasn't a rewrite of something existing. A C compiler, a JS runtime, whatever. It's just "look how much resources we can spend to produce something that was already available".

@cliffle Dave's Garage had exactly the wrong take on this kind of thing. "AI helping me write software is good and not stealing at all from everyone it stole from but if someone rewrites my software with AI it's theft!"

    😒
